UMD College Park class of 2022 EA discussion

Just makes no sense no decision letter in Coalition after email notification

If you are accepted into scholars, but feel that honors would be a much better fit, is there any way to appeal or apply to honors later on?

Anyone familiar with the CIVICUS Living learning community program?

Anyone have any insight for those that have not received an email yet or any changes to the coalition site as of Saturday afternoon? S applied EA everything received 10/17 with final rec coming in 10/30, he spoke to Admission three times confirming everything was in place before November 1st, this was after he was somehow in the system as a concurrent applicant student. That was fixed and then he called to confirm it was fixed and he was still EA and admissions confirmed verbally each time. The application completion date went from 10/30 to 11/3 to 11/6 in Coalition subsequently but his phone calls had them confirming he remained EA. Now we are perplexed on why he has not received any emails or updates in Coalition as it sounds like they are all out?

@thoughtterrarium I checked UMD’s website about this earlier, and the only information they offer is that students can apply directly to the honors program after completing 2 semesters

Also- there is the ability to request to be in Scholars

Accepted to Scholars. Question. Do have to go to Scholars or can I decline Scholars and just go in “regular”?

Can fc students live in on campus dorms/ are they guarenteed a spot? what about in the spring?

@A1A1A1 You do not have to accept the Scholars program. My question would be why not try it? My son is in Honors and other than taking 16 credits in Honors Seminars (he isn’t in a specific one, but rather chose a general one), it looks great on a resume. And being EE, all those things impress college fair folks. Congratulations on your acceptance! I’d certainly look into more information before declining though.

@ijh0828 Thanks for the info (I’m actually the dad - lol!). I’m very much for it and want him to take this opportunity. He is waiting on some other schools but this looks like great opportunity!

hey guys…got rejected yesterday :frowning: was my #1 and sucks cause so many people had lower stats than mine and i really thought i had a chance. does anyone know how appeals work and if they really look over them and accept people? i just want to try considering i dont have anything to lose at this point.

accepted OOS yesterday into the Criminology program !! was also accepted into the Carillon Communities program, but I’m not really sure what it is…

@serfre - I think that if you enroll in FC, then you can be guaranteed a dorm room. I say “can be” because there are some students who commute. Once you are in the dorm system, you’re ok.

I do want to point out that quite a few students change dorms in sophomore year for various reasons, and many students move to apartments in junior year.

@blue2000 I’m so sorry for you. I understand how that feels - years ago I was rejected from my #1 choice and I cried for days. Here is what Maryland’s website says about appealing an admissions decision:

It sounds like in order to appeal, you’d need “new and significant academic information”. It might be your best bet to do your fall semester at community college, get straight A’s - that means math, too! - and reapply for spring. Be sure that the community college you choose can work with UMD to match courses. (i’m not sure what county you’re in, but Howard Community College would be a good start).

If you want to PM me for more info, feel free to do so. Hang in there…this isn’t over yet!

D was accepted from OOS. 1480 SAT 32 ACT 4.0. No honors, No Scholars. I guess that means she probably isn’t getting any $$$. Not even on the radar without $$$. Admitted EA to much higher ranked schools. Her major is Biology and there is an asterisk next to it. Anyone know why the asterisk? Thanks

The asterisk means acceptance to one of the college’s limited enrollment programs. Students can either be directly admitted or they apply after they arrive… Maybe after their first semester or two?

Accepted in to Honors College:
IS
Computer Engineering
UW: 3.8
Weighted: 4.6
ACT: 34
Lots of EC
Great letters of Rec
Pls reply if you have any questions.

@A1A1A1 To answer your question, If you don’t submit your preference by 2/16, you won’t be in scholars. However, I’ve looked into it a great deal because my son was accepted. It looks to be highly regarded and The scholars program is housed in renovated dorms with air. Also, if you end up hating it, you can drop it but wouldn’t get the distinction on your transcript

Thanks @lifegarding
