UMD College Park class of 2022 EA discussion

@maryversity do you have any insight into the dance and music programs at UMD?

@klbmom18, sadly, no…maybe start a thread with that title and see if anyone pops on to comment? Also, check Facebook for Maryland pages - there may be one from those departments and their posts may give you some sense of those programs…I only know I love the Mighty Sound of Maryland at games…such talent!!!

@studentny Your experience sounds similar to that of my family member. Oldest child was a very strong student , applied to Stanford, etc. UMD was considered the instate backup, less than. . Denied at most reaches, accepted to a top 20 private(but not one of the HYPMS types) and as full pay, made little sense to them financially. And luckily, the child came around on that .The application strategy seemed mostly driven by the child, not the parents. Many high stats kids seem to feel pressure to shoot for the moon. Understandable, but sometimes the reality of admissions and finances get in the way. By the time second child was ready to apply, they were already hooked on UMD and luckily for them the second did not push for looking at expensive privates. They are a very happy UMD family!

@maryversity thanks! I do love a big college marching band!!

My son has still not received any email about his decision, and nothing is visible in the Coalition site. Are there any others who still have not received notification of a decision? Thanks!

I have not received one either, my counselor said there are two batches of decisions, one that has already gone out and one that has not. We should be hearing within the next 6-9 business days apparently. The reason why ours has not gone out yet is so they can get a closer look at our apps. Fingers crossed!

Hi, I just had a quick question. Hypothetical scenario, if I am not accepted for my first major (engineering), will UMD consider me for my second major (or general admission)?

yes

My daughter got accepted for Spring with FC.

She was disappointed, as she thought she had a pretty strong app:

1400 SAT,
3.6 GPA, 4.52 weighted.
Rank 121/465 in a strong HS.
7 APs, internship, many ECs.

She had many friends who were seemingly “less qualified” that were accepted for Fall, so we understand some of the discussion of having a hard time understanding the Holistic review process :). (I appreciated the comment from @studentny, as well as others…).

I’ve skimmed the conversation here and see quite a spread of results (some seeming lower numbers, some fairly close that got similar results).

I’ve thought of having her call admissions and double check her app (not to suggest that UMD made the wrong choice, but to ensure the application was recieved correctly, because I think there was at least some snafu with getting her SAT results there on time…). I’m not sure if that’s worth it or not, opinions?

I the end, it’s likely she’ll just have to weigh the FC option vs. what other offers she gets and make a decision.

does anybody know how to acquire my UMD directory ID??

@metalhawk, according to the Maryland website, since your daughter was “accepted”, even though it is for spring, there is no way to appeal. This is from the site:

https://www.admissions.umd.edu/enroll/admission-decision-faqs/appeal-requests

If your daughter definitely would have gone to UMD with a fall admission, going the FC route should not change your mind. Your daughter would be a regular freshman like everyone else. She would simply have her clases between 3p-9p and only for the first semester.

@metalhawk I just wanted to let you know that my daughter was accepted for Spring back in 2013 and my son in 2016. They both did Freshman Connection and both loved it. At that time, my daughter didn’t have the option to live in the dorm for FC and that was a pretty big detriment to her, however, my son was able to. My daughter had exceptional SATs, GPA and a ton of ECs. She was also a 4 year 3-sport Varsity athlete and was the captain for 8 seasons. It seemed crazy that she didn’t get Fall. However, she ended up graduating from UMD in 3 1/2 years with a 3.98 GPA and is now on a full ride to UMD grad school. Sometimes, these disappointments really fuel something inside a person to make them want to prove themselves. Sometimes I think she wouldn’t have done as well if she was a Fall admit in the Honors college. Congratulations to your daughter on her incredible credentials and acceptance. UMD is a great school and I hope she ends up going and kicking butt!

Metalhawk are you OOS or did your daughter apply to a Limited enrollment program? Sometimes those will have an effect since UMD only has about 25% OOS and they only allow so many in the LEPs.
I agree with UMDtimes3 sometimes FC motivates the students. My daughter finished her freshman year with all A’s.

I forgot to write that we’re in state. She did apply to the business school but was accepted to Letters and Sciences.

I do know that an appeal isn’t allowed in her situation (which is part of why I’m unsure she should even bother calling. (would it be relevant for any potential aid?) I actually think that the FC sounds pretty cool, and just about as good (in some ways kind of nice) in comparison to a “regular” admission.

Thanks for the note @UMDTimes3, that’s good context and inspiration!

@studentny Thank you for you post! My son had strong stats and when all was said and done, with 8 great schools to choose from, though not the top 3 he wanted, we chose UMD. It wasn’t high the list and, in fact, didn’t want to go for a lot of the reasons you mentioned: size, high school classmates, etc., but ultimately it has been the best fit. Yes, he’s a bit disappointed in the EE program for various reasons, however, he’s had opportunities to continue in music he otherwise would not have gotten. And those high school friends were beacons when he had a lousy roommate his first year. He’s staying an extra year because he’s added a 2nd degree in a a completely different school. Had he gone elsewhere we could not afford to pay as his sister is starting college in the Fall. He knows that this is a stepping stone as he plans to go to graduate school. UMD is offering an excellent education while saving him and us money. Now…if only the School of Music would let the Admissions office release the decisions! The waiting game is killer!

@spancha I don’t know what program your son is applying to, but the School of Music intentionally asked Admissions to hold all decisions. You could double check that the date in the coalition application in terms of submission is before November 1. If it is, and your son is in a different program, you can send an email to Admissions and ask when he will hear. Good luck!

@klbmom18 What information about the dance and music program are you looking for? I’m happy to share what I know. My son is an EE major and Voice major. I’ve learned a great deal about the music (vocal, at least) program through him. My D is waiting to hear from the School of Music right now.

@spancha I’m still waiting for my decision too. There’s still a couple of days left before Feb. 1 but I thought all decisions come out at the same time.

Any thoughts on Honors LLCs? My S18 is looking at Design/Cultures + Creativity, but is wondering if might be too STEM-y? He’s a communications major, very interested in politics, visual design (like interior design), popular culture, art, media, but not an engineering guy at all. He thinks the dorms for DCC look good. His other choices would be Humanities or Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

@pickledginger I think, from the reading we’ve done, the DCC does sound appropriate for your son. My D18 is picking EIP as her first choice for Honors LLP, but she is an Engineering major.
