Congratulations to the many kids with nice offers from UMD! Feeling the pain of kids who’ve been denied or not received decisions yet. Still waiting on our son’s decision. Submitted everything on time but coalition application account was deleted (long story). Coalition application people can’t/won’t restore his account. Decision at UMD is complete but we can’t see it without the coalition application. UMD keeps saying they will send his letter in an email (along with other students in this situation) but they haven’t sent despite promises to do so. Great kid with very high stats/great EC’s… but so very disappointed with this process. Our son feels forgotten Thankfully, he’s feeling the love from other schools but this is rough since this is our home state flagship.
After being accepted EA, did anyone receive a follow-up email with login information and/or ID to a separate (UMD) portal other than Coalition? I do see the UID on acceptance letter, but nothing else.
@Anthony185 in your decision letter there is a link to Admitted Fall Freshman Checklist, when you get to the page go down to item #5.
Thanks to everyone for their input. Very informative stuff. Proud dad here. After reading several EA threads the one thing I can tell is how truly competitive admissions has become. I was not expecting it to be so tough. My S has some pretty stellar academic stats, but admittedly he could be stronger in the ECs/Leadership. Honestly, the pressure these kids must feel is immense – I really do not know how they can keep up with everything and still have a life!! 1500/34 (Perfect 800/36 on Math); 3.9uw/4.6w; recruited athlete; has attended Comm College for Muli-var Calc’ LA; and Diff Eq (all A’s), etc.
Accepted UMD Engineering Scholars and we were a bit surprised no Honors, but looking over everything we think Scholars is better suited for him anyway. Deferred MIT and GT. Very surprised about the GT deferment, but we realize now that GT’s EA is heavily biased to In-State applicants.
Numbers of applicants is up significantly everywhere – not sure if more kids or kids are applying to more schools.
BTW – After going through CA; Coalition and several “Unique” admissions systems…I really am not a fan of Coalition system.
Quick Question, My first choice major was Business, but on my acceptance letter I was put into Letters and Sciences how easy is it to transfer into business school. Also can I decline the Carillon communities invite? What are the benefits to it? Vague answers online
So our daughter applied to UMD to study engineering. Notifications came out Friday Jan 26 but not for her. Why? Because she would like to get a minor in music performance. Asinine. If she had not applied for this minor she would know by now. Why is the UMD admission office letting the music department admission office control the notification? Of course there was an audition and they may have not decided yet who they will admit. This could take a couple of weeks. Why does she have to penalized this way just because she did something extra. The UMD admission office should have told her last Friday whether she had been accepted for her chosen major with a pending decision from the music department for her minor. As simple as that.
@ojalaa I feel your pain. D applied to the music school for a double major hence has to wait 1 more week (possibly longer) for her decision while all her friends got their results last Friday. Stressful for D n mom :(.
Illogical. It should be two separate notifications. If in the end the student is not accepted by the music department then the notification that should have been sent from the beginning by the UMD admissions office is the one that counts.
@andrewch18 What I have learned through this process is transferring into the Smith school is very competitive, but not impossible. If you are a strong student and can keep your GPA up then you should be competitive with others for transfer. I don’t know much about Carrilon, but I do know you can opt out and not do it. However it is one more thing that will set you apart on your transfer application to SMITH. They want you to be engaged/involved on campus. It’s just something to consider.
@andrewch18 - exactly what @momofboys2 said. Smith is competitive, but it’s not impossible. I know someone who transferred this year as a sophomore with a 3.6 GPA. Keep your grades up. Business curriculum is difficult to begin with so getting good grades in gen eds should be easy if you want to succeed in business school.
@ny1517 Ya know, I read that too (item 5) but apparently I’m a bad reader. I thought they were saying that they were going to send an email with a directory ID to set up the online stuff. I get in now though. Thanks!
@futureterp22 Did you get your directory ID yet? I was a little confused too, and had to ask. It’s still a bit weird though. Do this:
Just follow instructions from there. Sounds like a lot, not so bad though
Thank you, @Anthony185!
hi everyone! congrats to everyone who got in!! does anyone know anything about the Integrated Life Sciences honors LLP?? academically and socially?
Can international students receive merit scholarships from UMD?
As far as I know, everyone who applied by the priority deadline will be considered for merit scholarships.
Thanks @ijh0828 i know the music and dance programs are good. Im unclear about whether non majors can participate, whether you can do a minor, how to learn more.
Does anybody have any experience with the cyber security LLP…is it hard to get in?
@dr88888888 Unfortunately, no. “Only U.S. citizens and permanent residents can qualify for the university’s merit scholarships.” (source page: https://www.admissions.umd.edu/finance/freshman-merit-scholarships)
However, you can potentially apply for financial aid and the requirements/details can be found here https://financialaid.umd.edu/osfa/for_international.html
