UMD College Park class of 2022 EA discussion

Are merit awards just given randomly then or are certain criteria for being able to receive it. Thanks

Merit Scholarships are based on a holistic evaluation of your entire application. There is no set criteria for getting a merit scholarship.

Does anyone know if departmental merit awards for Government and Politics have been distributed yet? Still holding out a ray of hope DD might get one.

@noamaharon – My DD is in the exact same boat. We reached out to admissions and they told me she was a mediocre student and mediocre students aren’t granted merit aid. Not sure how a mediocre student (numerous APs, 3.95UW/4.2W, 1400 SAT) gets invited to the Honors College…

@lolodavis Did admissions actually use the term “mediocre” or is that your interpretation of what they were saying? If they said your daughter was a
" mediocre student" , that seems unnecessarily harsh.

@sevmom — the exact language they used was average… So not as harsh, but definitely got my hackles up…

I’m choosing between an Honors LLP(gemstone) at University of Maryland (in state, I wouldn’t have any loans), or Human Science at Georgetown NHS (70k, lots of student loans). I want to go to med school so that would mean more loans, but Georgetown is my dream school and I don’t love UMD. I would appreciate any advice.

Okay, Since your asking for advice- Go to University of Maryland.

There are an infinite number of choices you’ll be presented with in the future where you will like the more expensive choice more. The difference over four years between Maryland and Georgetown is over $160K. I believe that at the age of 18 few people can really understand what a huge amount of loans will feel like as a working adult. I would personally think you will greatly regret starting med school with with even $40K in debt.

Definitely go for the no-loans option. Even more so if you want to continue to medical school.

Our D was accepted and invited to join the FIRE program. SAT 1460.

Accepted: MD, Loyola, Drexel
Wait listed: GW
Denied: Hopkins, Goergetown

Wait listed at GW was the surprise. Her sister was accepted 4 years ago with lower SATs and offered 15k a year to study Engineering. She is happy at MD.

@pct3 …we were at the accepted student day today.I think it would have been less chaotic if we were there on time(8 am)…we were there at 8.45(under estimated morning traffic) …parking lot 4D was full…so we were rerouted to the stamp union parking lot(it was free). It is good to have a print out of the campus map…there is some construction going on…so some roads are blocked…Our info session was at the alumni centre and we were running around to find it. People were very helpful in giving directions.Up to this part it was a bit chaotic with no proper signs to where the sessions where.Once we got to the session ,the computer science breakout session was fantastic and we were blown away by the ACES session. It was very impressive.

@priya2015 We were there too! I was able to get last minute spots to the admitted student day. We were impressed with the faculty, but our student tour guide was unenthusiastic. We made 4 stops and did not enter a single building. Luckily, my son still liked the school. He is still deciding…

very important question!!! are we supposed to have a umd portal?? I don’t think I’ve gotten any information about one, but I’m not sure how were supposed to see rooming stuff or anything without a portal

also does anyone know if there are Facebook groups for the honors college llps?? idk how to pick roommates

Hi, I know this is the early action thread but does anyone know if reg decision results have been announced yet?

@pct3…we did not do the tour…we have already visited and toured before. Our son is still deciding too.which ones are you deciding between?Atleast after the visit we have narrowed it down from 3 to 2:)

@priya2015 Deciding between Pitt, Penn State and UDel. He is on waitlist for BU, his top choice. I am not optimistic with BU and needs to choose a back up. How about you? Good luck!

@pct3…Ours was deciding between Schreyer Honors college(Penn state),UMD and Georgia tech. Schreyer has been dropped…now its UMD(with some merit) or Georgia tech(Full pay)

@pct3…Good luck to your son too!
