I am trying to figure out what kind of student is awarded the Presidential scholarship. As in, what SAT score, rank, GPA etc is typically required, and if it differs for in-state vs out of state.
If you got one of these, can you please share your stats?
Based on experience with my oldest two, it’s really hard to predict the Presidential Scholarship. We are in state, and higher stats do seem to be required for in state students as opposed to OOS. I can’t remember their exact GPA’s, but my oldest had somewhere around a 3.9 UW/5.6 W, 1500 SAT, in top 10 of class (out of about 320) and he received $5,000/year. My second child to attend UMD had a GPA of approx 3.8 UW/5.5 W, 1490 SAT, top 10 out of around 300 and got $0 in merit.
We are currently waiting to see how our 3rd child fares with UMD. All of his stats are higher than those of the first two (4.0 UW/5.7 W, 1520 SAT, top 5 in class of approx 320), but of course we don’t even have an admission decision for him as of yet. I’m hopeful that he will be awarded the Presidential Scholarship, but certainly not counting on it.
Edit: We would love to see a Banneker/Key invite, but those are super competitive. I don’t think it’s likely that my son will make the cut for the B/K.
My daughter is a senior at UMd now. We are out of state. She was awarded $12,000 annually as a presidential scholarship. She had 1550 SATS, 4.0 UW and I forget what weighted but like 4.7/4.8 with 6 APs.
What are the chances of merit if you were not selected for Honors or Scholars? Is there anyone on here who had a child receive merit without those? Thanks.
Beside the full ride B/K scholarship, UMD doesn’t give much money for both President and Dean scholarships:
The President’s Scholarship provides four-year awards ranging from $2,000 to $12,500 per year. Both in-state and out-of-state applicants are eligible to receive the President’s Scholarship.
The Dean’s Scholarship offers annual merit awards of $1,500 for freshman year or $4,500 per year for both freshman and sophomore years. The Dean’s Scholarship is not renewable, and only in-state applicants are eligible.
My daughter got accepted to UMD last year with honors program with 4.0uw/4.78w, 36 ACT and was offered 5K/year President scholarship. We are instate so, that would translated into almost 1/2 tuition ;).
MY OOS daughter got $12,500 annually so a total of $50,000. Although she didn’t get admitted into any program at the time of admission she did apply to be in Scholars and was admitted. I believe she found out about the scholarship first. I don’t think one has anything to do with the other.
Question for you - did her scholarship letter say “$12,500 distributed over four years”? My son got a notice saying he’s offered the President’s Scholarship of $8000k distributed over 4 years. I’m not sure if that means $8k per year or $2k per year! Thank you!
DS’s says $32,000 to be distributed over 4 years. As mentioned before, OOS, 4.0 unweighted (grading out of 100 - has 98), 7 APs (can only take Junior and Senior year in our district, but he took Econ on his own as a Sophomore), no class rank, 1550, NMF, some leadership and good ECs but not world changing and not necessarily engineering (Model UN, Academic Challenge). Not admitted to Honors or Scholars. Emailed and asked to be reconsidered for Honors and did not receive a response.
Having just returned from Purdue where he got honors, it confirmed for him that he really wants to live in an honors community, and thus UMD is off the table. Being from NY, I’d prefer UMD, but Purdue put on a great program. Mechanical Engineering is current first choice, but has an interest in Aero also. FYE program at Purdue allows the exploration.
