UMD vs. UC San Diego for engineering/comp sci?

Hi I got into UCSD and UMD and I’m trying to choose between each of them. I want to study engineering, most likely comp sci. I got into UC San Diego for Mech. Engineering and I would have to switch into comp sci (not sure how easy/hard that is). Also got into Muir at UCSD which is apparently the nicest college there. I got into the UMD Honors College but didn’t apply early so no money there. Idk when UCSD gives out scholarships, but I am almost positive UCSD will be more money. I live on the east coast so I guess UMD is more optimal in that respect, but my sister also goes to UMD so I kinda dont wanna go there hehehehe. What do you guys think I should do? I am still waiting on a couple of waitlists and am hoping to transfer sophomore year or something, but I’m having trouble knowing which one to commit to.

Thanks!

UCSD does not give much aid to OOS students.
Assume you will be full cost at $55K per year at San Diego.

You can try to transfer into Computer Science at the end of each quarter at UCSD. Admission is based solely on GPA. Prior to applying, you need to pass four courses: CSE 8B or 11, CSE 12, CSE 15L, and CSE 20 or Math 15A. The odds of getting in vary from quarter to quarter; it’s difficult, but not impossible. Other engineering departments have a similar process with different prerequisite courses. Many students also consider majoring in Mathematics-Computer Science or other related disciplines.

Between the two, I’d say it really depends on how important finances are and how badly you want to major in CS. UCSD has a better known school of engineering and will give you more career building and internship opportunities in San Diego and Silicon Valley. However, that doesn’t matter if you’d rather be a CS major than a mechanical engineer, since transferring is hard. UCSD will also probably be more expensive, so if that’s an issue for your family i would go to UMD.
