What do you think the better choice is?

I got into Maryland for spring admit and I got into U of Miami for fall (business).
My ideal major would be either engineering or business, but I know both those programs are LEPs at UMD and would have to reapply with the chance of not getting in.

I just want to see what other peoples opinions are on the matter. Which school would you pick?

They are night and day differences. Don’t just look at the school academically, but also look at the campus and its location.

You hate the cold, you will hate UMDCP. You hate the heat, you will hate UMiami. School is more than just academics.

Night and day in some respects, but perhaps similar in others? Academically they are on similar tiers (maybe UMiami is /slightly/ less prestigious and will have a bit higher percentage of spoiled rich kids who aren’t that smart, being a mediocre-ish private versus state flagship), and both are near major cities. Of course, I don’t know how easy it is to get into Miami from UMiami and how that compares to DC from College Park. Spending a day on campus with a visit to a class might give you a feel for the type of students each attracts and your overall opinion about the school. Going into each city might also give you an idea about which city you prefer.

Weather-wise summer will be hot in either case, but you won’t have the seasons at UMiami.

I would say, honestly, in a perfect world in which finances are not a problem or consideration, go with UMiami. I feel like it’s easier to adjust as a fall admit, and you have the added bonus of not stressing about being admitted to the business school.

However, UMiami is significantly more expensive than in-state tuition at UMD though it has a similar academic reputation, so only you and your parents know how big of a factor that is.

UMiami, gives amazing merit aid. Our DS was accepted there and they gave him 90K. He was OOS for both UMD and UMiami.

^True but I assumed if OP got spring admit to MD he/she didn’t get such significant merit aid at UMiami.

But again, the cost/benefit ratio is something only the individual family can decide.

UMCP is a very good university to attend for business because you can go very far with what they have to offer. I’m not really sure abut UMiami though. I heard applying fir majors isn’t hard for spring 2011, but I also heard its hard to get into the business school after fall…

well im OOS for both, so tuition wont be too much of a difference. plus ill have to rent an apt my freshman year since i got in as a spring admit. I absolutly love both schools, and can see myself at either one. They both have plenty to offer and are well respected.

Tuition at UMiami is still at least $10,000 more per year than UMD out of state.

I don’t remember UMiami costing 41K a yr, might be wrong, but I remember thinking it would have been much cheaper for DS to attend UMiami OOS than UMD OOS.

Quick question…where are you living now? I know that you think it is no big deal to be far away from home, but you may feel differently when you get there. I think UMDCP is so popular for NJ kids, because it is far enough was that the folks won’t be popping in, but close enough that they can hop a train home if they want to.

I am from NJ haha. but i absolutly love both school. I just got into Syracuse engineering too.
