I was accepted to engineering
received 13k canes achievement award

SAT: 1490 (700 W 790 M)
Weighted GPA: 98 (school doesn’t report unweighted or class rank)
AP: US History, Chem, Calc AB and BC, Physics, Bio, Lit
Was a National Merit Commended Scholar (I’m from NJ which is one of the most competitive states for National merit)

Some extracurriculars:
-went on research trip to Romania for two weeks
-Treasurer of NHS
-tons of volunteer work (I go to a Catholic school)

LOR: Never saw mine, but the teachers I asked liked me a lot so I’m assuming they are good

Financial Aid: I got federal loans but that’s it, didn’t qualify for any actual aid, I’m a white male and my family’s income is over 100k

Overall, I think my stats are good. While the EC’s I had were good I don’t think I had enough of them. I was really hoping for more money and as of now I don’t think I can afford Miami even with the money they give. I might e-mail the financial aid office or something. As of now, this is my #1 so hopefully I can get more money.

Reflections: I honestly thought my GPA and SAT were a too low, but I explained my family situation thoroughly and I think that helped. Also, coming from a VERY low income family, I did the Net Price Calculator beforehand and it said I’d have to pay 20K a year, so even if I was accepted I could absolutely not attend. But, that was a load of crap, because if I attend UMiami, I’ll only have to pay approx. 5K a year so don’t lose hope!!!

General Comments (if any): For low income students make sure to check if the colleges you’re applying to are need-aware or need-blind, because that can heavily affect your decision!!!
