Yes ma’am, class of 1994. I believe Hillary Clinton spoke at the '93 commencement, and our class got cartoonist Cathy Guisewite
Good idea to mention in his LOCI. Thanks for the idea. I am hoping that reaching out the regional rep at this busy time won’t irritate them–but I would rather at least try to send them what they would prefer. Yes, our school should revisit it–not so much the grades, but the types of reports. I realize now that this probably impacted my older son who had a bunch of deferrals 3 years ag. It wasn’t even on my radar as a potential problem. This is a relatively big public high school–doesn’t have college counselors or a college office. The guidance counselors take care of everything. I don’t think they are used to looking at this level of detail.
Yep! I remember being disappointed that we got Cathy over Hillary! And then Cathy gave a nice speech, but we were sitting out in the rain (and the band couldn’t even play). Ah, the memories. At least one could get IN to Michigan back then!!
I think that’s a legit reason to reach out to your regional AO. You don’t want how your school presents or reports grades to be something that could hurt him. Best to explain it if possible, imo.
Our in state HS operates on a block schedule too and there are a couple of full year AP courses, so I would have to think that it’s not a completely unheard of scenario for admissions. D22 has four AP’s this year, but only two of them were first semester, so there will be no grade report on the other two AP’s since she’s only about 2 weeks into the classes.
@LSA1994 and @PAcollegemomx2 you both are flooding me with memories! I am the same UM year as you, but I was enrolled in a 5 year masters program so didn’t participate in the Cathy graduation. BUT I worked for UM Transportation in 1993 and got to drive all of Hillary’s entourage + the MI politicians traveling with her for the 1993 graduation! Got to meet her on the tarmac of the airport right next to Air Force 2 – such a great experience! I tell my daughter about stuff like this and have shared so many cool memories when we’ve walked around the campus … UM/A2 are just incredible places to be. She is deferred but all fingers crossed (and LOCI drafting happening) that her application will shake loose for RD.
You all are lucky. I graduated in 89. We were told that it’s “tradition” for the new University President to give the commencement so we had none other than James Duderstadt as our speaker. I guess we were lucky that it wasn’t Schlissel
I would definitely send the progress report with the more detail. As long as all grades there are good.
When my daughter was a senior (2020), I knew deferred applicants who were accepted in the first wave (it happened 1/31 that year) without ever submitting a LOCI, and ones who submitted LOCIs early who were ultimately waitlisted.
I think the decision will have little to do with the timing of the LOCI submission and far more to do with their overall assessment of your application in total.
Funny how people are now crying and implying yield protection.

Although it is widely accepted that U Mich plays the yield game (at least w/ OOS applicants), this year is more than that. With the record number of applications no school is confident is its ability to manage yield to avoid over or under-enrollment.
I truly believe this is why so many highly qualified applicants are getting deferred here and at schools not known to defer
You are being just as snide as he is, so no need to pat yourself on the back for any degree of a measured or thoughtful response.
Every time someone claims that their child was deferred because they were too good for Michigan (scores too high, grades too good, ECs too impressive), you are taking an indirect hit at every kid who was admitted early. Most in this thread are parents who (usually) can intellectualize this idea, whether they agree or disagree. But students, like the one who responded to you, take it personally. You could have given a little more grace in your response.
I am happy to moderate the post but I was in no way trying to minimize anyone who got admitted. I’ve never implied that my son deserved an admit, in fact i specifically posted about telling him he is unlikely to get in (post #1783).
I was explicitly responding to the theory that TO and lack of AP scores are deterministic factors in deciding who gets deferred. And I did not appreciate my post being twisted to fit some pre-conceived response.
I will edit my other post and leave this as a note.
According to this: https://umich.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2259/kw/GPA
All classes are included in the GPA calculation.
We were thinking that but the progress report looks woefully unofficial. So that’s why we contacted the regional rep to check. In a perfect world, Michigan (and other schools he needs to submit grades to), would allow the counselor to send the transcript and for my son to upload the “report card” to his portals. Probably not going to be that simple, but here’s to hoping.
Wow–that’s quite a story! Good memories for sure. I enjoyed walking around Ann Arbor again in 2018 when I was touring with my older son. Fingers crossed for all of our deferred kids!
Thank you for the reassurance. He wrote to the regional rep tonight. Hopefully will be well-received and he will get a concrete answer.
Camebak, weird for you to say all of your friends got in with 1500 EA, but that 1500 is not important. Anyway, if you are now a junior or above the game is massively different for the schools and the kids.
If you are a sophomore, the difference is not massive but huge.
Since this is more complicated than complicated reach out to the AO from Michigan /admissions and ask what they suggest. They have seen everything before. Let us know what you find. Good luck.
