UMich Ann Arbor Early Action for Fall 2022 Admission

Understood. As a data nerd, I am not feeling/seeing/hearing 7,500-8,000. Too many high schools are way down and too many people on chats saying their high school got very poor and unusually low results.

My sincere hope is that the 2,000 I feel like we are “missing” went to first gen students and other new buckets that do not spend 12 hours a day on college chat rooms.

An interesting data point that they are seeing real time that we can not see is how is the flow of LOICs vs historical years. If their flow right now is good then they will be relaxed and the coming flow will be slow and normal.

If their flow of LOIC right now feels low or slow, then someone in the admissions seat will be saying “we are losing kids who are pissed by the high deferral strategy” and in that case the wave of admissions will start to flow more quickly than normal.

It’s all data. They have more than us! In spite of your great work.

Late to the party but S22 was “postponed”. OOS, 3.96UW/4.35W, 32 ACT, good (but not great) ECs, good (but not great) essays. His better essays were actually for the Ross portfolio so if he can get into LSA, still hopeful for Ross acceptance. But, being realstic too. Was accepted to Indiana and Wisconsin with direct admit to business schools so he has good options. Still waiting on UIUC and UF who issue decisions on 2/25.

23 applied from his HS (top 15 in MO). 1 accepted. Historical numbers are a bit of a mixed bag. Not every deferred kid reports final results, but accoridng to Naviance Scattergram, for Class of 2025, 22 applied, 2 accepted. Class of 2024, 29 applied and 9 accepted. However, only 1 of those 9 enrolled so that may partially explain the numbers from the last 2 years .

Submitted his LOCI yesterday. Midterm grades were good too (raising both UW and W GPA). :crossed_fingers:

Not sure about UM in particular, but I’ve heard that for competitive schools, about 1/3 submit LOCI, 1/3 withdraw applications and 1/3 do nothing. Does that sound about right for UM?

While they say its not required, I’m hopeful that it makes a difference. I’m also hopeful that it’s just semantics when they say “no preference is given for the order or date in which the form is received.” I get that submitting it earlier doesn’t give you a better chance of being accepted. But, I hope that as it relates to the TIMING of their final decision, that prefernce IS given based on submission date. In other words, I hope that the earlier it is received, the earlier they will issue a final decision. I don’t think my S22 can handle the stress of waiting until April to find out.

Does anyone know if UMich recalculates GPA? My daughter’s school doesn’t calculate weighted grades and they only calculate end of year grades, not mid-semester so it’s often a tough comparison to other schools. She did well her first semester this year, but it won’t impact her GPA since her school doesn’t calculate it.

My guess is they are monitoring the flow of LOICs now as a piece of data but will not start pressing buttons for another couple of weeks.

I have heard previously from some chats from accepted students who got access to their files once they were on campus that the sense was that there are basically a couple of different stacks of folders now. And that the best stack is the one where if the grade update is a check and the LOIC comes in then hit send on an acceptance.

Yes, apparently they do. Again, buried deep in some other chat on another site there is a perceived formula which is unclear but something like academic grades, no pluses and minuses, no AP or honors points and that has to be over a [3.8] to pass that test.

You can clearly get admitted without that check mark but that (third hand and impossible to verify) is the formula.

Yes, they do. I’ll repost what @srparent15 said back in Post #199, which summed it succinctly:

My number was actually 3600 lol… and of course a guess as I stated since they had around 7200 freshman last year just as an example…

Does anyone know the definition of a core class? Does this include PE, Band etc. Or does it only include Math, Science, English, History.

I’d say it’s like “Roger Hub” for the UC’s, with respect to core classes. Not all the weighted and capped stuff.

First time poster/long-time lurker. I am the parent of a postponed EA applicant. He is going to compose/send the 250 world LOCI this weekend. However, his mid-year grade reporting situation is posing a challenge. The high school uses block scheduling (i.e., typically students take 4 courses per semeste, but there are a few exceptions). The exceptions include a number of full-year AP classes. My son has 2 full-year AP classes this year. If we were to send a traditional transcript via Common App, the only courses that will show up (at all!) are the ones that are completed. In his case, that means 1 honors English class and 2 quarter classes (electives). Grades are A/A+ in these, but they truthfully provide very little new/helpful information about his academic rigor or senior year performance. He talked to his counselor, and it turns out there is another option. The school can provide a mid-year progress report which looks more like a report card. This report would include quarter grades for each course (even the in-progress full-year-courses) as well as midterm/final exam grades. To me, this is bit strange and really too much information. It leaves room for scrutiny if everything isn’t perfect. Is anyone else in a similar situation, or is this just a strange repercussion of the way our school does courses and grades? Current plan is for him to e-mail the regional rep at Michigan (and his other deferred school and RD schools) to see what individual preferences are. A further complication could arise if the 7 schools in question don’t agree. Common App has decided to make use of a “one and done” system this year. You can only upload 1 type of mid-year grade report (and that will go to all selected schools). Meanwhile, the semester ends tomorrow, so he is already running late, by no fault of his. Thanks to all who have read this far/waded through this post.

I see. So Band is in, PE is out. Not that it makes a big difference but I am hoping S22’s stellar 7th sem grades pushes him over the line. He literally grew up on the UMich campus and this postponement has hit him more than he wants to admit.

Yes, PE is out. Not sure about band though. Band may be out. In fact, based on their language, I believe it’s out.

Honestly, and it’s strictly an observation from CC, Michigan almost always seems to come through for the applicants that care about a Michigan admission the most.

I want Michigan to deliver for those that really want it.

May I ask why your son is uploading this through CA? It should be sent as an official transcript from your school?

We were told that there’s a “Mid Year grade report” listed in Common App. The school transmits the transcript by “attaching” it to the Common App. If the schools want a progress report with more detail (given our strange grading situation), that can also be attached. But only 1 of the 2–and the same has to go to all selected schools.

LSA1994–was that your UM grad year? Me too! : )

This is so true of Tulane. They send out mass mailings enticing kids with free applications. They have managed to lower their acceptance rate this way. Unless you do ED, it’s a very very low chance of admit - nearly impossible. Tulane is a great school and destination for many kids but people should be aware before spending time on free applications thru RD.

Anyone know if Stamps Scholarship invites were sent out? Normally they are sent out “end of January” but not sure if that timing is true last year or this year?

THanks in advance

Sounds like your school might want to revisit how this grading system affects deferred seniors, yikes. I would take a few words in his LOCI to re-emphasize his consistent academic excellence. Can’t hurt just in case the report they receive doesn’t give the full picture. Sending good vibes for his admittance!
