did anyone else (it seems to be restricted to OOSers) get this?
it's supposedly based on just financial need and academic achievements (GPA/SAT/AP etc etc).

this would be fantastic if i received it but it's only awarded to 100 students each year ...

i have a 2370/4.0 gpa uw. but i only have 2 AP scores b/c my school only offers 2 during junior year--will this be a disadvantage for me?

thanks!

also, where do i stand for admissions to the honors program (assuming my essay is good)? i would really really like to be a part of the honors program!

AMD, they usually do all of the scholarships you will get at once...34/4.0 and only the Regents award is about par, unless you are from an "underrepresented" area/group, in which case, scores that are significantly less could get you a sizable scholarship to Michigan.

It's a bummer, but $1500 is better than nothing. Just as paying $20,000/year is better than paying $45,000/year. Take what you can get.

Do you mean that I should not expect anything more? That is a total bummer. I am of minority alright, but may not be under represented at U of M. I am of asian (south east) decent, so I am pretty much screwed. I would love to have some sort of merit scholarship. It would be a nice moral boost.

Personally, I think people should be grateful to get any scholarship money. In comparison to many other elite public universities, Michigan gives a ton of scholarships. At Cal, for example, the only major scholarship given is the Regents (there is no honors program), and even then that is no full-ride. So be thankful that you are getting any money at all. Also, Michigan is one of the best schools in the country, with some of the best students in the world. There are a ton of deserving students, and they have to find some way to try and make it as affordable as possible for everyone. So complaining that you "only" get 1500 probably isn't the classiest thing to do.

Having experience all of this already, knowing a lot of kids who went through the same thing, I wouldn't expect more than the $1500 without at least a 35 on the ACT, or some kind of 'underrepresented' background. But you never know. Figure it's a month of working 40 hours/week over the summer, and this is tax free.

College is expensive, take what you can get. People say they will only come to Michigan instead of some Ivy League school if they get a scholarship, etc. Go ahead. If you are in-state, Michigan is ~$20,000, an Ivy League school will cost you $45,000/year. So does spending another $100,000 if you don't get a decent scholarship make sense? That's up the the potential student I guess.

Not true at all. I got all 3 of my awards at different times. I don't think I know a single person who won several scholarships who got them all in one package at the same time. Where are you getting this information from?

I did get a letter a couple of days ago saying that I would get measly $1500 as regents merit scholarship.

If you're not interested in this award, you can certainly decline it. I don't understand why you would complain about getting a scholarship, in any amount. If someone offered me a three hundred dollar scholarship right now, I would thank them and take it.

Of course I am not going decline the award. But, earlier I was told that all scholarships are awarded at the same time. I guess I had higher expectation. Yes, I have to be greatful for whatever I get. Perhaps didnt use the correct words. Eitherway, U of M is the best choice for me due to location and cost.

Who were you told this by? I'm not trying to tell you that you're definitely going to get other scholarships, but I'm certain that they don't all come at the same time. At this time of year two years ago, I had received nothing. A few months later I had a full ride and I knew I was going here.

dmso: some ivy league schools (harvard, ie) give a TON of need-based aid. if I were accepted there, my middle class family would only have to pay about $6000, even less than my FAFSA EFC

acamaj01: no, most students get no merit aid at all.

other posters: I heard that if you get the regents scholarship, that's an indication you might get more money later.

I think that the Office of Financial Aid (OFA) may tell you, at the same time, which if any OFA-administered scholarships you've been awarded. So in that sense you might find out about some of them all at once. However, schools and colleges also have awards that they administer separately, without OFA's involvement, and these notifications could come later.

Ummm, whoever said earlier that scholarships come from U of M all at once I believe is wrong. I got the regents scholarship a couple months ago and was notified today of winning the Engineering Scholarship of Honor, which is for 8000 per year. So i guess they come when they come, so hold out hope people!
