Hey CC...so I LOVE University of Michigan and would especially love to go there for college. Currently I'm a junior in high school in my second semester and would obviously be applying this fall to enroll in Fall of 2014. So would I be able to get in? With the classes I'm taking this year and next? Scores, etc.

Ok here we go:

Application: Ross - Business (unless I apply during my freshman year...the app confuses me) or School of Literature, Science and the Arts - Economics (possibly a minor in french if that matters)

Gender: Female
GPA: 93.95 at the end of my sophomore year (3.75?)....But hopefully at the end of this year with my AP classes it will be a 3.8 or over
SAT: Took it once and got a 1800. Working with my tutor to get AT LEAST a 2000 (ideal = 2100)

-Will apply for National Honor Society

Hooks: not much...me and my twin are both applying at the same time? i can make really good spaghetti? hahaha i dont know

Make sure and have a 3.8! UM values GPA more than most colleges. The SAT needs to go up quite a bit. Maybe try the ACT if you haven’t. UM is used to getting a good mix of SAT/ACT scores.

I got in (out of state) with a 2200 and a 91.33 gpa. My essays weren’t anything special, and my EC’s were certainly weaker than yours.

I only took the SAT’s twice, first time being 1820 and i got it up to 2200 on my second try. My advice is to just get copies of a bunch of old SATs and just do the problems, get used to them, and time yourself. I found an old SAT prep book of my brothers which had like 20 old tests in it. All I did was completed the old tests while timing myself (doing one a day for only about a week) and I had an huge increase in my score.

Also, my class rigor was mediocre at best. So it seems that they really take into account SAT/ACT scores more than anything else.

ACTs are pretty useful when heading for UMich, lol. Personally I find them easier than the SATs, but that’s mostly just a formatting thing. I won’t say that they are required though.

Are you in state or OOS? Much more difficult if you are OOS. Write great essays that indicate why you want to study your major there- research the faculty, and see whose work interests you. But to echo others, I think GPA is king at Michigan. However, there were a lot of students deferred for EA with great stats (they may end up getting accepted in RD round). Best of luck to you.

Hi CC, I don’t think I have a strong chance of getting in, it’s definitely a long shot, but please chance me :)

Application: LSA- probably English, I am most strong in that (35 on ACT english, but I don’t know if they look at that)
Gender: female
UW GPA: 3.44, total (w/o any athletics) 3.38
ACT: 31 (2nd time, first was 27)
SAT I: never took it
SAT II: Bio M: 680, U.S. history: 660

Ethnicity: White
EC’s: Sandpiper Juniors (community service organization, 4 years)
Mayor’s Youth Council (selective leadership program working w/ the city)
Sports editor of school paper (was a writer last year)
tennis team 4 years (JV 3, Varsity 1 year)
baja club (housed a student from Mexico for a week, 2 years)

Awards: (few) California Scholarship federation 11th and 12th grade
Scholar Athlete award: 9, 11, 12 (did poorly in 10th)

Work experience: internship w/ a PR firm last summer, lots of babysitting (don’t know if that counts)
