UMich Essay #1 confusion?

So UMich’s first essay prompt is:

Essay #1 (Required for all applicants. Approximately 250 words)
Everyone belongs to many different communities and/or groups defined by (among other things) shared geography, religion, ethnicity, income, cuisine, interest, race, ideology, or intellectual heritage. Choose one of the communities to which you belong, and describe that community and your place within it.

I wanted to write about Catholicism, because I am in the Catholic group, but I have read time and time again that writing about religion is a “no, no” in the college admission world. I figured this prompt would allow me to do so, but would I have to speak about it objectively? As in, not include too strong of theological ideas (The Trinity, Sacraments, etc.)? If you think I should not write about religion, could you please list groups in which people belong? I am hispanic, but I feel that is too common of an essay and would really just blend in. Many thanks in advance!

If it helps mine was about my football team. We were the worst team in the league freshman year and I wrote about how I / we learned to be a community; that everyone had a role and that we had to learn encourage and help each other. Even my mom who was against sports essays (too cliche) said it turned out okay.
