UMich Internal Transfer Engineering --> Ross

I got into UMich Engineering for early action which I’m really grateful for but I also have some concerns. I’ve always been unsure about whether to major in engineering or business. At the time of the Nov. 1 deadline, I was leaning towards engineering, but now I kind of regret it. I wish I had applied to Ross. I hear that’s it’s very hard to transfer to Ross if you are not a pre-admit. I love Michigan, and I’d hate to see myself not choose this amazing school just because I’m unsure about my major. How am I supposed to know exactly what I want to do as a HS senior ?? Basically, I just want to know if transferring to Ross is feasible in any way, although I have a feeling it’s not.

It’s hard to do a cross campus transfer since they limit how many kids each year. Look it up in their website.

Or as my son is doing… Do Industrial engineering. It has a large business component. He plans to go into business management, consulting or finance. He did a lot of business stuff on campus. Look up the Barger leadership at Michigan and optimiZe at Michigan.

Or how about doing a business minor?

Business minors through Ross and still hard to get but someone can take business classes etc.

Industrial engineering seems kind of nice … but since I want business over engineering then I’m not sure if that major would give me the same opportunities as a major in Ross would. @Knowsstuff

@JBStillFlying I hear that the Ross minors are still very hard to get into. Also, since the engineering curriculum is so difficult, adding on a minor might not be manageable. I’d rather just do one or the other–business or engineering.

Suggest you take a look at the Engineering Global Leadership Honors program (BSE/MSE). In your last year, you’ll take half your courses in Engineering and the other half at Ross. It’s a great program if you are interested in consulting.

I know your not asking this but many engineers end up being the CEO of companies… FYI.

I can be wrong but I think something like only 100 spots are open to minors. I saw the number somewhere but don’t remember.

I stand corrected.

Thank you @Knowsstuff. This definitely makes UMich a tough decision. I am very conflicted but I have many more college decisions in March so only time will tell.

@smarttart Hey, I’m a current Ross student and I thought I’d give you a quick bit of info. First, Ross is great. Second, in absolutely no way is Ross the be-all-end-all of “businessy” pursuits. First, there are SO many clubs that are focused out of Ross but have large percentages of non-Ross students in them. This includes professional business fraternities, consulting groups, you name it. I repeat, you do NOT need to be in Ross to apply/interview for these. Additionally, if you’ve never heard of IOE, I recommend looking into it. IOE is basically a major for somewhat Ross-inclined engineers (I know several engineers who are in IOE and love it). Lastly, like I said, Ross is great… but there are still a lot of opportunities for non-Ross kids. MES (Michigan Economics Society) for instance is for anyone interested in economics even if they’re not an Economics major and they bring in companies to speak/recruit too.

Hope this helps!

Please PM met. I will let you know the business opportunities my son did as he was transferring to engineering from Lsa. We are talking using real money, creating a board with graduate and alumni helping out. Michigan will support your endeavors.
