I am choosing between UMICH LSA HONORS intending to do CS and CMU engg in mech engg. Can any one advise what is better.
Both of these are fine schools. However there is one big difference. If you care what highly knowledgeable employers think when they see you are from UMich or CMU, then they will see you as roughly equal with CMU getting the slight edge. This, however, does not apply to most hiring managers. Most people have heard of UMich, but very few people know it is actually one of the top schools in the nation. It is usually just deemed another “good state school” like OSU or PSU.
CMU is less known among the general public, but of those who do know its name, it is pretty much always associated with schools like MIT and Caltech.
I was accepted at both schools for engineering, but I don’t think I ever considered UMich over CMU because they would be roughly the same cost as someone out of state from New York. The only reason to pick UMich over CMU would be if you are in state for UMich. In that case, you would be foolish to turn down UMich. Otherwise, CMU would be a better option.
I am an international and for me CMU will be 54k more over four years than Umich.
I will be doing CS in UMICH which i really want to persue and i hav got honors also
In CMU i wont get transfer to SCS as i hav discussed with the admussion staff thr
I wanted to know if mech engr has some potential internship in CMU . CS in UMICh is having lot of oppertunities so far as internship is concerned.
Pl advise
And also if i choose mech engr with CS minor is it a good choice over Umich Lsa CS
I don’t think the CS minor matters much. I would say a mechanical engineering degree is much more well respected than a CS degree. You can even still work as a software engineer out of ME from CMU.
54k is a lot though and I’m not sure going to CMU over UMich is worth it. I would say it is your own personal decision at this point. Michigan will give you a better “college experience” I am sure about that
@Caleb1212 thnx.
