Can anyone tell me which one is a more respected school? In terms of prestige, education, reputation, and job placement, which one is the best overall? Which one would you go to? I'm really at a loss as to which one I want to go to.
AS an international student have to pay almost same tuition for both school, (over $40,000-) and I am interesting in engineering also considering double major. How these two schools compare with each other. I don't have much information about these two schools reputations since I live in out of US. I am hoping someone could give me a bit of an insight to the pros and cons of each school, and hopefully I can choose right place for me.

Both are exceptionally well ranked, and I don't think you could go wrong with either (as long as you mean Carnegie Mellon, and not Central Michigan). I think CMU is a little more highly regarded all around. So if you wanted to double major, it would be a great option. And I imagine, it is probably easier to double major in say, business and engineering, than it is at U of M. If you're going to be paying at full rate, you may as well go to a top private university over a large state school.

Thanks for the responses.
I am interest in mechanical engineering, robotics or computer science, and also interest in aerospace engineering. But I am not sure. I am science and math lover and curious about all kind of engineering stuffs.

gprime, CMU is private and Michigan is public. But if you are going to lable, and rightly so I might add, CMU a "top" private university, but you could at least pay Michigan the same courtesy and call it a top public university. In fact, CMU is generally not considered a top 10 private university whereas Michigan is generally considered one of the top 3 public universities. And I don't think the whole private vs public argument applies in this case. The primary difference between public and private is resource availlability. But Michigan is wealthier than all but 6 universities. Michigan's endowment is 6 times larger than CMU's!

Michigan and CMU are equally regarded in Engineering, but I think that Michigan is probably slightly more highly regarded overall.

Heritage, for Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Michigan is better than CMU and for Computer Science, CMU is better than Michigan. In terms of Engineering, both are very highly regarded. If I were you, I would pick the school that suits your personality best...in other words, go for fit.

Michigan is better in Mechanical, whereas for robotics and computer science, the edge goes to CMU.

Michigan has a long history in aerospace (the only school with an alumni chapter on the moon), and its program has been ranked among one of the best for decades. I'm not sure the program is offered at CMU.

I presume you meant double majoring in engineering, for example, mechanical and robotics (personally I see little reason to double major in engineering and business if your interest is in engineering). In general, Michigan is better is most engineering disciplines, and offers more breadth and interdisciplinary opportunities.
