Alright, I have around 2 days to decide a college and I need help.

ACADEMICS/MAJOR: Right now, I want to study either psychology or journalism or maybe even linguistics. But psychology is my preferred major at this point. UMich has one of the best psychology programs in the nation, but no journalism program. NYU has both programs, but they are not as prestigious. I also want to consider the fact that I might change interests during my freshman/sophomore year at college.

AID: First off, my parents for some reason are opposed to taking out loans/letting me take out student loans. With that in mind, UMich isn't giving me anything but work study/loans (~$9000 a year). NYU's CAS Scholarship is giving me $25,000 a year. With work study/loans combined with the scholarship, NYU can give me ~$56,000 a year (which is the amount of tuition).

LOCATION: I'd much rather have New York City than Ann Arbor (but then again, I don't know too much about AA). I like the city life.

SPORTS/COMMUNITY: It won't be too much of a deal-breaker; I can handle no sports. NYU will have the Giants/Yankees/Mets; UMich will obviously have the Wolverines. Both school communities seem nice.

INTERNSHIPS/OPPORTUNITIES: NYU seems like the school that would have more opportunities, considering its location. However, UMich seems more prestigious than NYU.

So for me, the two major points that bugging me are ACADEMICS/MAJORS and AID, since they clash with each other. LOCATION comes at a close third though (I loved NYC when I visited).

Thanks!

Go with the better financial option, both are great schools. Michigan may be a little more “prestigious” but if it costs too much, NYU is a fine option.

Alright, I guess financial aid will play a big part in this.

One more question, I’ve visited NYC for a few days before, but is it worth living there? Right now, it looks like the only things NYU has going for it is financial aid and location.

Definately NYU, win win situation.

How about asking the nearly 19 million living in the New York City metro. With that said, ofcourse it’s worth to live in NYC. College towns may be a preference for undergraduate students but large cities are also nice.

^^^Did not get admitted to Michigan. Now he never recommends the school.

I suggest NYU because it’s a win win situation. I see no reason to suggest UMich over NYU.

Win-win? not quite.

As for the campus, NYU is notorious for not having one. whether or not this is what the OP is looking for, that’s his (her) decision. Ann Arbor is consistently regarded as one of the best college towns in the nation.

You really cannot beat UMich psych. I think Stanford could make a good case, but honestly UMich is the elite in this field. I’m sure NYU means well, but in psych it’s no contest.

Yeah, the campus I’m not too worried about. The problem is that UMich is better for my intended major but is expensive as anything. NYU is cheaper but doesn’t support my intended major as well as UMich can.

^^Have you compared total costs? NYC is not an inexpensive place to live.

Yes, that’s true, but if NYU costs around half UMich does (tuition-wise), will living in NYC offset that so that UMich would be the better option financially?

No UMich would not be a better choice financially, not even close. Financially and academically NYU is a win win situation. Good luck.

Alright, one final question. Is NYU’s CAS Scholarship last for all four years of college or will I need to get it every year I apply for financial aid? Is CAS merit-based or need-based?

The reason why I’m asking this is that NYU is only cheaper with that CAS Scholarship. If I can’t secure that scholarship every year, than UMich would be cheaper ($47,000 for UMich vs. $56,000 for NYU sans CAS Scholarship).

What type/ name CAS scholarship. I would only assume you would already be informed by the scholarship length, such information is usually always presented with the amount awarded.

On the FA sheet that was mailed to me with the rest of my acceptance packet, it only says “CAS Scholarship” with no info of length. I can’t find any info on this broadly-named “CAS Scholarship” anywhere online.
