UMich math research opportunities for undergrad

Any current Math major at UMich here?
I want to know about the research opportunities available for undergraduates at UMich?

Are freshmen and sophomores encouraged to research with professors? I have heard that for first two years classes are over 100 ..how true is that?

Also I have heard of Summer REU at UMich but as an international student I am not eliglible for it...any more opportunities?

UROP is open to all students disregarding their intended major. I am sure there are some projects listed under professors in the Math department or related to Math as there are over 1000 of them.
Freshmen classes are usually big, sophomore classes will depend on what you are taking.
I am not sure if Summer REU is referring to the Summer UROP. As there is a stipend given to the student, that may make the international students ineligible. I am not sure about that. Sometimes it is due to the restriction of funding. Nevertheless, you can definitely do a research project in Summer (with or without pay). In my understanding, foreign students are allowed to work on campus (at least when I was a student). The best approach is to start a UROP and then continue the project in the Summer. I am not sure about Math, but there are also some club activities that involve research some faculties.
Also, for UROP, you are not really limited by the topics on the list. You can bring up your idea during the interview with professors. You just need to know the potential interests of the professors as they cannot really help you much outside of their field.

@billcsho‌ - How big can I expect Freshmen and Sophomore classes if I am a Math major??

Thanks for UROP. But does that mean that is the only opportunity available to international students ? Since there will be many internationals how will be the competition ??

I plan to go to grad school in Math PhD so getting into research is really important and most REU will not take internationals

Any more help will be appreciated.

I don’t think there is any difference between local or international students in UROP. When I was a research fellow there, I had students from anywhere. It is not that competitive considering over 1000 projects that are mostly targeted to the 6000 freshmen. For the class size, you can login to Wolverine Access and look up the class schedule info where you will see the capacity of each class.
