UMICH rejection letter?

Hi, I applied early action to the University of Michigan and got deferred. So I sent them an update letter at the end of January, and I received this letter back:

Thank you for your continued interest in the University of Michigan. The University received almost 40,000 early action applications this year (record-breaking volume), so admission was very competitive. Before we can make a final decision on your application, we need to further evaluate the strength of the regular decision applicants and the yield rate of our admitted students to determine if we have space for you in the freshman class. As stated in your deferral letter, we will have a final admissions decision for you in early April.

Again, please note that admission to the University of Michigan is the most competitive it has ever been this year. Although I encourage all deferred students to keep the University of Michigan as an option, I would also suggest that you explore the other opportunities available to you. Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions or concerns. Go Blue!

Is this pretty much a rejection or have others received this letter before and have been admitted??

Once again… This is a standard deferral letter. Nothing more or nothing less.

I agree it’s pretty bad. We got the same one.

That wasn’t my initial deferral letter. It was after I sent my update.

Is it not a rejection pretty much?

I understand but the wording is very close to the deferral letters
Keep in mind… They get thousands of these. They need a system to answer everyone. Just a templated response. Once deferred this is an honest response.

How would you write one to a student?

No. It’s a form letter. Read nothing else into it.

They don’t give you hints at rejection. It’s form letter reiterating that you were deferred. If you will definitely enroll if admitted, ask your guidance counselor to call and tell them. But you have to be 100% sure you will enroll. You are putting your GC’s reputation on the line.
