Hey all,
So my regional counselor from UofM just send me this in response to my letter of continued interest. She mentioned that she will “continue to advocate for my admission” and that I’m a “strong candidate”, but I can’t just take that at face value IMO. So far as you all have found, does this mean anything for my application as it relates to my likelihood of eventual acceptance/denial? Thanks. ?
Letter:
“Thank you for your continued interest in the University of Michigan. Please be assured that it will be noted in my evaluation of your application and I will continue to advocate for your admission. The University received almost 40,000 early action applications this year, which was record breaking volume and as a result, admission was very competitive. Be assured that we use a holistic and comprehensive review process and looked at all aspects of your application before a decision was made. We considered your grades, curriculum, test scores, essays, extra-curricular involvement, and personal background as part of our evaluation.
Before we can make a final decision on your application we need to further evaluate the strength of the regular decision applicants, as well as the yield rate of our admitted students to determine if we have space for you in the freshman class. As stated in your deferral letter, please submit your mid-year grades no later than mid-February so they can be considered as we continue to assess your application. Otherwise, there is nothing further we need from you at this time and we ask you do not send in any other additional information. As stated in your deferral letter, we will have a final admissions decision for you by early April.
Again, admission to the University of Michigan is the most competitive it has ever been this year, so while you are a strong candidate and I encourage you to keep the University of Michigan as an option, I always encourage all deferred applicants to also explore the other opportunities available to them. Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions or concerns.”
If you guys got responses, what were they, Do IS and OOS fundamentally differ? Please post thoughts/your own letters, etc.
IMO You are definitely not in the “decline” pile at this point.
My LOCI response was similar and I was admitted late March (waiting is brutal). Just depends on what they see as they make their way through the regular admission process and where you would fit. Be sure to get those grades in on time to them…
Hang in there.
Good luck!
Not sure what you mean about IS and OOS fundamentally differing. If you mean in terms of acceptance rate, yes. The OOS acceptance rate last year was 40+% and I think OOS was closer to 20%.
@mckate I just meant in terms of letter response formatting. I heard of an IS kid that got a different letter, and an OOS that got the same as mine. Could just be coincidence though.

Do you think it’s worth it to apply for winter 2020? (I’m an oos transfer) Does it sound like I would get accepted?
