UMich vs UPenn

what do you think of the honors program? is it really intense?

If not into big time sports try Penn.

trust me guys, i'd love to "try Penn" but i was just deferred!!! im already in Michigan so right now that's my only option...

the girls there are alright, not as hot as the girls in southern schoool, but DEFINITELY better than MIT girls.

The honors program here is basically as intense as you make it. You can take only a couple honors courses and a couple regular courses and it will be fairly easy. You can also take some of the tougher honors courses like orgo, analysis or calc 3, bio, and have a very intense semester. Basically, you can make Michigan intense if you're in honors, but if you aren't, Michigan can't be all that intense.

okay first--thanks everyone who responded for your help!! next-let's just say you got accepted to Penn and Michigan--which would you choose? I know Penn is a "better school" and has more prestige but taking into consideration the whole college experience-where would you go? Based on location, student body, social and academic life?

You didn't get into Penn so why do you care about people's opinions?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=128166

ihoffman, My information is seriously dated, but I went to Michigan undergrad and Penn for grad school, and I loved U of M and all, but there really is no comparison. Penn is big enough that you will have all kinds of people but they will be uniformly outstanding. Michigan has a lot of instate students that could never get into Penn. If financial considerations don't make it easier to go to UofM and if you are fortunate enough to get accepted to Penn, i think it's a no-brainer.

NJres, how dated is your experience?

Is there any chance of getting in to UPenn from a community college? If you're doing really well there?

Equal grade points I would hire U of Michigan ahead of a Penn grad, but that is in engineering and based solely on our having gotten some of our best engineers from U of Mich.

beprepn

Alexandre, U of M 30 yrs ago (but I visited Ann Arbor last summer) , Penn 25 years ago (but have been back numerous times and have been in touch with the school through alumni events).

There are many reasons a student might choose one school over the other. Ignoring two potentially very important factors, cost and location, I would choose Penn. But I am not going to bash UofM to justify this opinion, because I graduated from U of M and I think it's a great school!

NJres, in the 1970s and even 1980s, Michigan and Penn had roughly equal student bodies. Similar acceptance rates, similar SAT ranges etc... I am pretty certain there wasn't much of a difference in terms of quality of their student bodies. Today, I would agree that Penn has a better studend body, but then again, it is very easy to find brilliant students at Michigan. I would not worry about that detail unless the OP doesn't have the ability to chose the tougher classes (which only attract top notch students) and the right circle of friends.

Sorry, I missed this earlier, but at U-M nonresidents make up a little over 35% of the undergrad student body (a little higher than reported earlier).

i care about people's opinions because i was deferred and there is still a chance that i will get in. last year 6 kids were accepted after being deferred from my school so i still have hope.
I know i will get a good education at both places. im more concerned about the student body/ who my friends will be. Where are the nicer, friendlier kids who want to do things other than get completely wasted in a frat house every night?

Again, if we're talking honors program at Michigan, the student body is FAR stronger than the Penn student body. I'm in honors at Michigan, and everyone I've met here has the the academic firepower to get into Penn, and many did but came here for financial reasons. Of all the people from my high school that got into Penn, none of them would have had what it takes to make the Michigan honors program.

well im sending in my michigan honors essay tomorrow--so we'll see about that. do you like the people you've met? i dont need people to be super smart to be friends with them. when i say student body i mean more the type of person they are, ya know what i mean?

Hahahah what? "FAR" stronger? Yea, ok.
