UMichigan vs. McGill

FWIW, I pulled out the MacLeans’ guide to Canadian Universities (sort of a Canadian version of USNWR), for some stats on McGill:

Average class size for years 1-2: 64.7
Average class size for years 3-4: 23.2
Student retention: 92.2%

You might also benefit from looking up data on National Survey of Student Engagement (I believe both McGill and Michigan would participate). Nice to get comparative data.

It will help you to define your version of “safety” school. If it’s simply a “admit” check the box then you have to figure out how much effort your son is willing to put into the application and how much money you are willing to spend if that is the “one” come spring. There are thousands of kids attending their safety schools for one reason or another…keep that in mind.

Don’t know if this applies to you or not, but be aware that kids applying to Stanford REA or Yale SCEA can no longer apply to Michigan early. This year Michigan switched from rolling admissions to EA, and neither Y nor S permits a concurrent EA.

Interstesingly there seems some confusion on this, I was going to contact Yale admissions. I believe the official policy is that you can apply early to your state public but informally people have been told that the instate requirement is waived and you can apply early to any state school while still applying scea to Yale or Stanford. I wdnt actually do it without getting confirmation from the admissions office personally though. I am not sure if we are doing early and if we are, whether it will be to Yale or Mit (which is nonrestrictive).

fogcity, apparently you didn’t read your own link. McGill is ranked 3rd in Canada, after U of T and UBC.
