UMich's admissions, at first, looks great because of their online application and the chat options.

I applied ER, and UMich doesn't tell you anything unless you are accepted. I found out way past the deadline of 12/24. (On the website, they bragged about how we would know before Christmas).

Now its April, and while I have heard back from most of the places, UMich's wolverine access still is not updated.

The admission pool is not to blame for UMich's terrible admissions program, because my application process with UCLA and UC Berekeley was smooth.

Most likely wins the award for worst admission process in America. Guarantee we end up finding out April 15 or 16… just two weeks before the deposit deadline!

I have to agree with you, it has taken them too long to make a decision after my deferral. I have been checking the mail everyday hoping for a letter from them, I don’t even care anymore if I am rejected, I just want a definitive answer. I really do think University of Michigan should have their final decisions made on April 1st so we have some time to think about where we want to go before we make the deposit.

Just a little reminder about the UC admission process vs. UMich admission process: The UC’s don’t collect transcripts, kids self-report grades. They never see your transcript until you have decided to attend a particular school. The UC’s also don’t accept letters of recommendation. They do these things because of all the paper they would have to deal with. I personally respect colleges like Michigan and the University of Washington that want to know just a little more about kids. I work at a high school in California and some of the kids accepted at the UC’s would never have been accepted had they had to come up with a letter of recommendation. Also, all apps have to be turned in by November 1st. Lots of other schools have much later deadlines.

That all being said, I do think that advising students re: acceptance or not as soon as possible, should be the goal. If I was in charge of the UMich decisions, I would definitely move the deadline up to January 1st, with all decisions out by April 1st. I’m sure part of their lag time with the deferrals is to check their yield. They need to figure out if they have spots so they don’t over-enroll. Schools that over-enroll have disasters on their hands trying to turn doubles into triples, hiring new instructors, etc. UC Davis and UW have dealt with this in recent years.

I do wish there was a better way for all concerned. As we all know…it is a very imperfect process on so many levels.

UC is the exception in the case, not UMich. I didn’t like either of their non-common app applications, but UMich is just doing a miserable job. Schools like ND have no online sources to help applicants but they get it done. UMich, instead, has great resources that can do so much more. Wolverineaccess, and the livechat system are great ideas. However, they just don’t seem to give a crap about student that don’t get accepted.

Well let me rephrase that…There are so many ppl who haven’t heard back. UMich is not following up on deadlines, and they are leaving so many applicants up in the air.

They need to tell the applicant whether he/she is admitted on time.

I applied 10/28. I was supposed to hear back by 12/24. I didn’t. They didn’t tell me online whether I was in, deferred, or rejected. I get a mail in mid January telling me I’m deferred. That’s a problem. Now its April 3rd, and they have given me nothing.
