hey i cant decide just yet....
its between...

-Boston U
-UMinn
-UW Madison

i got accepted into all and am gonna major in mechanical engineering.
but truth is, i dont want to do mechanical engineering forever. I wanna use mechanical engineering as a stable career then eventually open up some kind of music franchise because music is my real passion. and i dont want to go into music immediately because i know how risky it is.

i know that uw madison has a great engineering school, but how's the music/club scene? if i knew more about it i would probably pick uw immediately. but then i know that Boston is full of culture and diversity, but i might b sacrificing a good enginnering school. and then with Twin Cities, i think you got a lil bit of both, but yea idk....

i have visited all of these schools within the last month, but still am unsure

so plzz help me outt....pros and cons of each? which i should totally eliminate??
thankss.

Do you have a passion around mechanical engineering? If not, I would suggest that doing it as a way of paying the bills is not going to work because you will be facing competitors for jobs that will have worked harder and more passionately toward that end. There are far more easier ways to make a buck than that field. Also, a lot of M.E. jobs have shifted overseas over the years. That this trend will end or even diminish has its own risk.

I do understand the need to pay bills and lots of people have day jobs while still enjoying music either professionally or as an amateur.

Are you interested in the ‘music scene’ simply as a fan or to get some gigs? Certainly Boston has a far greater ‘music scene’ then those other locations, however, competition for music gigs is intense. There are so many other music schools/programs, talented musicians going for it without college or post-grad musicians trying to make it.

I went to a week-long seminar at UW-Madison. I was impressed with the campus and nightlife. So, while I’m a big fan of Beantown I felt that Madison has a lot to offer.

What’s money looking like for all three? That’s a big factor.
UW is arguably the best of the three schools all-around, and certainly better than BU for ME.

I will say, though, the Boston music scene is definitely on the uprise. The new House of Blues has put on some great shows in the past few months. Middle East Downstairs is always cool too.

I’m guessing you live in Minnesota or Wisconsin? This would be mean you have in-state tuition at both. Boston University would be much more expensive. Are finances an issue?

ctyankee: yeah, i do have a passion for mechanical engineering, it’s just that my passion for music has grown much much greater. engineering is i would say, a second passion. ever since i was a kid, building those knex & legos, designing and such, ive always loved engineering. but i got introduced to the music scene as a teen, and am loving it so much more. so yeaa. as of now, i am just enjoying the music scene as a fan, but i want to eventually get some gigs. i do have musical experience (drumming for almost 7 years, guitar for about 3 years, and just got into dj-ing and music production).

vociferous, EilzaB, & Savs: Uminn is lookin at just under 20k, UW is 34k, and boston u is like 40-ish k. i would be paying out of state tuition for all of these, because i am from Illinois.

In that case, I would go to Minnesota. UW is great, but not 14K per year greater than UMN not even close! UMN is in the top half of the “big ten” U’s
