UMKC 6-year BS/MD Program

@PursuitToExcel, agree. This is obviously very important since UMKC is a six-year course and they want to make sure that these young candidates are mature and committed to a career in medicine. That is why academic stats are not just all that they look at. As a physician, I can tell you guys that once you are in medicine, it is rather difficult to fail and not finish the course. You actually have to work rather hard to fail! I recently spoke with the Deans of a few Medical Schools (as friends) and was told that some schools that emphasize on academic stats are finding problems with some of the students being able to interact with patients, especially during the 3rd and 4th year of medical schools, despite doing well academically.

There’s definitely a empathetic side involved. You know what I really enjoy though? Explaining to patients how things work so they know what they’re dealing with just as must as the doctor does. I’ve come to realize it’s an important aspect to sort of teach the patients too in a way. I think i’d enjoy doing that as part of my career

@GreenSage, glad you like the emphathetic side of medicine. Yes, this is extremely important. To be able to explain to patients their conditions, why you are proposing how they should be treated, and to put yourself in their position are what distinguish a good physician from any other physicians. Always make sure that you explain at a level that the patient can understand and yet keeping the information accurate is very important, although sometimes can be very challenging.

@IMGDAD. I wish I could explain this to the interviewers but it comes out sounding either like made up rubbish or word-vomit. And I don’t want to sound conceited trying to explain myself either. It’s all so difficult to phrase things.

Has anybody here with an application date of November 1 (instead of Oct 15) heard from the UG office/notification email? I haven’t received either and I applied a day or two before the Nov 1 deadline.

@GreenSage and @IMGDAD - when did you submit the complete application?

@mb5296, my son completed his UG application at the end of September and Med School application before October 15. He received his UG acceptance in October.

@mb5296, I submitted my complete UG app and the med school stuff all together only a few days after the October 15th deadline. Much much before nov. 1st and I still haven’t heard back from either so I think you’ll be fine.

@mb5296

I submitted UG a couple days before the October 15th deadline, and the med school app at 11:30PM on October 15th. I only heard back from UG, but when I called the medical school admissions office, I told them my last name, and they said I made the early notification deadline…

@IMGDAD, @GreenSage, @huskerstk -thanks for replying…this is such a great forum for exchanging information like that…

My UG application was complete (with transcripts and ACT score being received which I confirmed through Pathway) on October 24. The medical school application with references, etc. was complete and submitted a few days before Nov 1.

Other than the initial email that gave me the Pathway username and password, I haven’t heard a thing…so I guess its a waiting game now…

@mb5296

You could call the office of admissions for the medical school and ask if they’ve gotten your app and if you met the deadline. I got pretty worried when I saw other people were getting confirmation emails and I didn’t.

@huskerstk - yes that’s a good idea…I’ll call them tomorrow…

@mb5296, Yeah, I only got the pathway email so far too. It was the confirmation that they received your UG app. But there was nothing after that. Please let us know what they tell you when you call!

@mb5296 and @GreenSage, calm down. As long as your applications are received in time, it does not matter whether you receive an email or letter confirmation or not, your applications will be considered. Whether or not you get accepted into the UG program is no big deal, unless you really want to attend the UG program even if you are not accepted into the 6-year BA/MD program. I doubt there would be many applicants to the BA/MD program who would go to UMKC just for UG degree if they are not accepted into the BA/MD program!

Greensage, I received acceptance letter from UMKC undergrad over three weeks ago as well as email confirmation from med school of application receipt. You should have received login and password to check on application status online.

I only received the UMKC Pathway info and the pathway says my scores and all that were received. I didn’t get anything else though. I should call them I guess…?

I received the pathway login plus the umkc medical school login. So you might want to find out what happened.

@IMGDAD: Unfortunately, as stated in the application process, if someone is not granted acceptance to the undergraduate UMKC then they can not proceed in the process to be considered by the med-school. I am not sure if it works that way for other schools as well, but I know at UMKC it does.

@Greensage
yeah I’d call them

Called the medical school office and they said the application is complete and is being reviewed. They did not have any knowledge or information about the UG confirmation though, I guess there are two separate offices that process these and each has no direct knowledge of the other.

yeah i was thinking the same thing, because our medical application was submitted directly to the medical school on THEIR site where as the UG was submitted to them on their corresponding admissions page.
