Ummm...don't know how to ask this

I don't know how to ask this, but here it goes-
why do most people hate NYU?
honestly, what is that that makes them hate it so much?
I've always loved it coz it's so culturally diverse and it's that exciting big city. I'm from this kinda small awfully conservative place in India and I crave for the liberal and culturally diversity of NY. And also, I've never been able to travel abroad anywhere which makes a place like NYC more alluring.
So, I was thinking of applying ED to NYU, but I'm being kinda put off by everyone's hatred for the place.
If I don't apply early to NYU then I was thinking of applying ED to Brown which is a big reach but I really LOVE Brown! BUT, I really LOVE NYC!
Apply ED NYU or Brown? I'm so confused. Please help me.

Well, if you hang around all people from a "kinda small awfully conservative place" then it's no wonder that people there don't like NYU...it's pretty much the exact opposite of conservative; it's one of the most liberal schools in the country. There's a level of acceptance here for so many types of people that would otherwise not find acceptance in the majority of other schools in this country. You should probably attempt to visit NYU before you apply ED, but I would say the same for any school, since it's a binding decision. But if you love it here, and you love the atmosphere, you shouldn't really listen to anyone else...you're the one that's going to be spending at least four years of your life studying in school. Might as well make it a place where you want to be, right?

Well, people here don't even know that there is an NYU. I read about this dislike for NYU on the internet. And there is no chance my parents will let me go half way across the world to visit a campus coz it'll be too expensive for just that.
And thanks, I should just go with my instincts right? Yes, I won't let other people's opinions affect my instincts.

Then why it is the number 1 dream school? 4000 incoming freshman out of 32000 applicants?
People generally don't like things that they don't really know about. Kids are stressing to get in. Go with your gut. It is an amazing school in an amazing part of NYC.

milk n sugur is right, it was voted #1 dream school by Princeton review for three years in a row (this year replaced by Princeton) Maybe people don't like it cause the reject so many people. My school had 14 apply, 4 got in...if you ask the other 10...they probably "hate it" now too.

Maybe the people who hate it are homophobes, or scared of diversity in general

THE ONLY negative thing I hear over and over about NYU is "there's no "real camps" or rah rah football team, and yah...it's expensive

Well it was rated as the #1 dream school, disregarding cost. NYU is notorious for poor financial aid and high costs, and it's only going higher each year.

Basically, people dislike NYU for a few reasons, even if they are slanted:

1) VERY tolerant and eclectic. Conservative's worst nightmare.
2) Very expensive = rich people = snobs. But again, wealthy people cannot be accurately generalized. But the reality is that NYC is an expensive place to live in.
3) It's a famous school, though you will meet many people who say it is vastly overrated because of its costs and its prestige compared to actual academics (which some people will say is only applicable towards Stern/Tisch).
4) Intercollegiate sports are virtually unheard of. They exist but there is very little collective school pride.
5) check out urbandictionary.com's definitions for NYU, #'s 2, 7, 9, 10. Funny enough, these are the same sentiments held by my classmates about NYU, hehe.

It's strongly encouraged for you to visit the school before applying early, because alot of people have a VERY romantic view of what NYC and NYU are like, and when they come here they are very disappointed. If you are drawn to diversity NYU sounds like a great place - but it's not for everyone.

I think it's jealousy.

NMR, your post made me smile :)!

it was 36,000 applicants this year... I believe ;-)

yay more nyu haters!

what comments of hatred are you referring to, hirokee?
i know a lot of people who go here hate things about it (as with anywhere), but overall LOVE nyu. it's hard to say more without you giving a specific example of the "hatred".
Brown and NYU are very different, so I would say think about what you love about each one and then decide which one you most want to go for!

hirokee:

Why are you worried about internet postings about NYU since your parents won't let you come half way around the world anyway?
