UMN Twin Cities Early Action for Fall 2023 Admission

Given the tuition reciprocity between MN and WI, does anyone have a sense as to whether MN offers merit based aid to WI residents?

I live in Wisconsin, and I know of WI residents who have received merit-based aid to MN.

Daughter has been admitted to UMN- CSE for chemistry. Offered Honor College placement and Presidential Scholarship. Is there a possibility of more merit-based awards?

My in-state S22 had similar stats, and at the last minute (in April I think) they added on another “research scholarship” worth maybe $1,000 or $1,500 per year.

Good to hear. Is there anything she should be actively applying for?

For my S22, they just awarded the extra research scholarship, he didn’t apply for it. I’m not sure if there exist others you do need to apply for, because UMN was not my kid’s top choice, so we weren’t looking for extra money there.

Congratulations! There are also college-specific scholarships available (scroll down and expand CSE to see what you can get). AFAIK those are based on your application. My S23 got one from CFANS. Snail mail notification a week or two ago. Like everything else, it appears to be rolling.

When should I expect to hear about the Honors College? I was accepted to CBS in December and received an OOS scholarship but no word about honors yet.

Accepted to CSE 1/23. When do scholarship decisions come out?

Merit scholarship offers come later (in some cases much later), and arrive in the physical mail, not on the admissions portal.

Admitted students day (April 1) registration is now open - we received an email yesterday.

If deferred, do you have to wait until 3/31 for a decision?

This is from the deferred Q&A section of the admissions site.

Does anyone have safety concerns about UMN? My son loved it and it was his first choice for a long time, but lately the crime around campus and on the LRT has been concerning. There are a few FB pages about UMN and UMNSafety that I found pretty informative.

Our daughter is back to considering this school again after thinking for awhile that maybe she didn’t want a very large school. So I’m back to researching and refreshing. I went to university in a very large city and so I’m not as intimidated by crime. From what I’ve been able to read so far the students there don’t seem too worried and just exercise normal level city smarts caution. Would also love to hear insight on this topic or any others. Thinking of visiting in the next month or so . . .

I guess more than anything I’d like to hear why prospective and current students LOVE this school. What makes it special?

My daughter was accepted into Carlson, and our concerns for her safety are precisely why we took UMN off of her list. We know a junior there who said that if she weren’t so far along in her studies, she would transfer.

Your mileage may vary, but there’s plenty to worry about as the parent of a college student without having the added worry of crime and violence. And we’re from the Chicago area, so we’re not easily spooked. It’s just not what we want for our daughter.

We live in close range of campus and my daughter is a PSEO student who may continue next year. We have lived in the area almost 20 years. What I would say is use your urban smarts. Travel in groups, don’t leave your things unaccompanied, dress like a local. We have had almost no problems. I am walking on and near campus constantly.

My son was very intrigued that the school gave all students light rail passes, but it isn’t advisable to even take the light rail near campus at this point due to crime both on the trains and on the platforms. There is currently a joint task force of parents, administrators and city officials addressing these issues.

I’m faculty at the U of MN med school so receive an email whenever there is a ‘public safety’ crime (robbery, carjacking, sexual assault, etc). The campus and surrounding area used be generally pretty safe for a big city until after George Floyd’s murder. At that point the U dissolved its relationship with the Minneapolis Police Dept. and used only its campus police, which were less threatening to POC but also much less of a deterrent, and as result crime on campus SOARED. In 2020, 2021, and early 2022 I received multiple emails every single week about robberies, carjacking, etc. I wouldn’t have wanted my own kid there those years there despite my close ties to the U. I feel sorry for kids like the current junior that @Sorrento17 mentioned, who started during a really scary and traumatic time for the city of Mpls.

However, this summer the U re-established its ties to MPD, AND and crime in Mpls has decreased overall, so this school year the crime on campus is way down. I now receive maybe 1 or 2 emails a month, which is probably no different than any other big urban school. S23 was admitted to CSE for engineering and would be attending if he hadn’t gotten into Madison. I wouldn’t hesitate at all about sending my kid there now.
