UMN vs Madison. helpppp!

My son has been accepted to University of Wisconsin- Madison, University of Illinois ,Urbana, Illinois Institute of Technology (almost a full ride), University of Minnesota, College of Biological sciences,is wait-listed at University of Chicago, and is expecting final word on University of Illinois -Chicago GPPA (direct admissions to medical school from high School), and John Hopkins.

He intents to study Biochemistry as an undergraduate. Given the competitive nature of medical school admissions after having earned a bachelor’s degree, and our financial situation, GPPA appears to be his number one choice, if he makes it; otherwise based on the college of Biology Dean’s presentation, just last Monday, we feel that Minnesota is the best value given the innovative first year teaching of biology courses and the opportunity for undergraduate research opportunities. If someone has personal experience that suggests otherwise, we welcome your comments.

What university to attend is not all about name recognition. Spend some time and scrutinize the programs that you are interested in. Ask yourself the question, where will I develop and learn more as a student?

You will need the skills once you enter the workforce, know that no-one gives a hoot about where you went to school if you can’t deliver.

UW is ranked far higher for biochemistry–7th in the US and has the largest biosciences research enterprise in the US. The biochem dept has it’s own campus which is being expanded again right now.

@NamesAre4Lames: GPPA is a great choice if he makes it. Otherwise, I would go with the cheapest option and save up for med school. Those schools are all good choices.
