****UMTC Fall 2016 Applications/Admissions Thread****

Wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of decisions are released today through Monday.

@AnineC they still need to have a decision deadline somewhere on that message for those still waiting. So hopefully the change on your D’s tracker indicates good news on the way. Good luck to her!

Thanks. Must stop clicking refresh on the U page.

@AnineC two strategic times to check would be around 7 pm central time this evening, then again on Monday morning before the start of the workday.

Was you D accepted to Carlson yet?

@AnineC My tracker still has the message so not sure if that means anything. So nervous for decisions!

@AnineC - yes, fortunately she has that one behind her now but is waiting on several other decisions. She’s doing fine - I’m a bit nervous :expressionless:

Can someone chance me for CEHD?
3.62 GPA
top 30% of class
24 act, taken 4 times with 27 in math, 27 in reading, 26 in English and 23 in science (all on different tests obviously, but shows I am college ready)
17 transfer credits from my local university
Minnesota resident
tons of EC including student council, Youth advisory commission (youth city council subcommittee) President of choir for a year, link leader, baseball manager sen. year, NHS, tons of volunteer work including working with PTSD patients and the humane society.
I also intern at my local bank and will be shadowing human resources in the 3rd term of my senior year.
My father attended grad school though CEHD and donates a small $5 a month, and my brother attend the U in the College of Engineering.
I took pretty easy classes up until my senior year and took a few tough classes my junior year but nothing too amazing.
I do have all of the requirements for English math science and social sciences, as well as 2. years of a foreign language
I’ve networked pretty well, as both my admissions counselors know my name and have met me in person.
I applied early decision and sent in a letter of recommendation from a teacher who had great things to say about me.
I’ve toured the U on 3 different occasions.(just happened to be there so why not)

Got accepted to CBS this morning!

Accepted to CLA for Chemistry!!! Pre-Pharmacy

GPA: UW- 3.31 W-N/A
ACT: 32 English, 29 Math, 26 Science, 26 Reading, 30 Writing
Debate team captain, Tennis all 4 years, 70 hours of service, and more

@aninec My daughter had the portion of the message deleted on Thursday late afternoon. And changed to accepted either very late last night or first thing this morning…we had looked around 9pm CST last night with no acceptance. But then this morning around 5:30am CST, it was an acceptance. So hopefully hers will change in the next day or so too!

My tracker still has the sentence, bleh. I hate waiting.

It needs to hurry up. Still the same. I was wrong her GPA is 3.7 unweighted. She got an acceptance to U of Mass today…honors and a nice scholarship. Still expensive though. U of M is her last choice. She wants to leave the state and cannot appreciate that U is a great school right at her doorstep. Anyone else dealing with trying to make them understand that they are looking at years to pay off student loans?

Some students want to branch out, even if it comes at a cost. I don’t think there is anything wrong with it, as long as you don’t go crazy.

@AnineC if she’s a 3.7 and a 29 ACT with honors and PSEO she has an excellent shot at Carlson. It’s only a matter of time, hopefully. We know someone with similar stats last year who was accepted in January. We, too, have a kid who wants to go OOS. She likes UMN but has her eye on a couple of very selective privates - we’ll see if she gets in. At least there’s UW-Madison, right?

Hello All!
First off let me start by saying how amazing this community is, truly nice to know that there is also a community of applicants quivering in the terror of admissions  (I say that in the nicest way possible!)

Can you guys chance me?
–> U of M is one of my top schools that I look on attending.

I go to a pretty well-off school in the suburbs of Chicago and school does not rank because of the excessive competitiveness it has caused in the past, so it’s a pretty cut-throat environment.

Academics:
GPA: 3.1 (UW) & 3.9 (W)
Course load: Have taken many AP’s and Honors which includes Including all 4 years of Math, all 4 years of English, 3 years of Science, 3 years of Social Studies. I have always looked for rigor in my course load.
ACT: 27 E:30 M:28 R:28 S:24 W:30. Super score: 29 (I’ve sent in 3 tests which include my best scores).
-AP Scholar
-Honor Roll

Extracurricular:

  1. Speech (2x regional winner and sectional qualifier)
  2. NHS (NHS President)
  3. Student Services Associate (started events through students to help facilitate programs throughout the school and community such as Suicide Awareness Day and Unity Day)
  4. PAVE (Exec Board Rep for Students against Drunk Driving)
  5. LYFE (Founder of the fastest growing club (250 members in one year) in our school. Helps students with disabilities form friendships throughout the school. I help run multiple programs throughout the community)
  6. Foreign Exchange (Secretary)
  7. Student Council (Member!)
  8. V-show (Bollywood Dance Coordinator)
  9. Swam (2 years)
  10. Water Polo (2 years)
  11. Etc.

Extra - Out of School:

  • I am an ambassador for Teen Empowerment of a local nonprofit based in Chicago. I have had the opportunity to intern with this non profit and speak to students throughout the Chicago south side about empowering themselves to rise up past their circumstances.
  • Through this nonprofit I have had the opportunity to speak on national television (featured on The View, FOX, ABC, MSNBC, Good Morning Chicago, etc.)
  • Volunteer with over 200 hours (Museum, tutor, etc)
  • I work as a swim coach
-Worked as a Tutor at local tutoring center.

UMN is one of my top choices just because it is absolutely a fantastic place to be with the multitude of opportunity. I have recently just had the last sentence that is on my portal chop off, so hopefully I hear decision soon. But, please, let me know of what you think my chances are. Thank YoU!

Welcome, @HelloNutella - hopefully the sentence cut-off thing is an indicator of good news.

What college at UMN did you apply to (first and 2nd choice)? They don’t superscore your ACT but rather take the best composite you send in. What are you planning to major in? You have a lot of great leadership and EC activities which will definitely help your application.

Any hooks at all (such as URM/sports/legacy, etc.)?

Good luck to you!

Thank you so much for your reply @JBStillFlying2, I certainly hope it is good news! I applied to CLS - Economics and then Undecided (General). I don’t have any hooks really, except my counselor has called in for my admission decisions many times to check, so maybe they will see that I am very interested.

For College of Liberal Arts (CLA) your ACT is right at the median point, so that’s good.

Your uw GPA is a tad low; however, if it has been improving over time that will help you. Unfortunately in the absence of a class rank it’s difficult to know how exactly they are assessing the GPA but they do know how to deal with a lack of ranking (which is happening more and more frequently at high schools now).

Be sure to keep us in the loop! Good luck!

Hi!
I got accepted to Carlson about two weeks ago and got the actual letter a while back. But I noticed that it didn’t mention anything about scholarship money or honors program acceptance. Is this delivered separately at another time?

@Funnyan congrats! Yes, if you are accepted to honors the tracker will change to indicate that and you will receive a letter via regular mail. Any merit aid will come via regular mail only (no tracker notification).
