@Banker1 that’s a good idea on both counts. Is the website the 2016-17 tuition? I haven’t seen a 2017-18 tuition amount on One-Stop yet.
Edit to add: Please do share what they tell you about future tuition increases (after 2017-18) for admitted OOS students - will they get locked in or not. It would be good to get some clarify on that.
@Banker1, that is a big price hike, but less than they projected. UMTC wants to raise OOS tuition by up to 15%/year so they can reach their goal of 35K OOS tuition. You can find several articles about it online. I was very disappointed to find this out (by doing my own research) after paying the application fee & test fees. They have worked hard to keep it quiet.
“We sent an email inquiry to see why the OOS tuition listed on our portal doesn’t match what’s shown on website. The portal shows a 9% higher amount.”
It is quite common for the website numbers to be last year’s numbers. Most schools didn’t have 2017 numbers last fall, and are just starting to put them together now. We still have not received FA letters from several schools, relying on estimates. Minnesota’s plans to raise OOS tuition have been well known for a while.
“Also want to know if we’d be locked in for future years at the rate that is shown or if we’d be subject to future increases.”
I think you know that, based on what you wrote on another thread:
“@Risingsky that $5k/yr would probably only offset the planned increases in OOS tuition over the next 4 years. Nothing more.”
My understanding is that the raises would be limited for current students, but not for incoming students since they know what they are getting into. Some schools (Illinois, Miami of OH) are known for locking in tuition for four years; I do not believe that UM-TC is one of those schools.
I am reluctant to refer to Googling as “research,” but it is good that you found this out. The articles began appearing in June 2016, so it was known before application time. We knew before applying, but proceeded anyway. We liked UM-TC and they waived the app. fee, so for the price of test score fee we found out where we would be at. Most likely too high for us, but at least we know.
They have not worked hard to publicize these raises; I would not expect that from admissions. But that is not the same as working hard to keep it quiet. I don’t know how much effort they have expended to suppress this info.
They can’t suppress the information even if they wanted to because the UMN is a public institution. The results of tuition changes are made public via published announcement. But regarding these hikes, Kaler made the initial announcement of their intention in Dec. 2015, well before this year’s admission cycle! It was picked up by the local papers and has been openly discussed ever since (including those at the university who are against the strategy).
Anyone looking at UMN’s OOS tuition knew it was way out of wack given current trends in both selectivity and education costs (both locally and nationally). The question was never “will it change” but, rather, “when”.
@Banker1 It is my understanding that the board (or regents?) meet in July and decide on what the incoming school year’s tuition will be. That is what they told us at a college visit back in Jan.
@BubbleGirl90 I had read that UMTC was going to significantly raise OOS tuition, but I didn’t know the target was $35k/yr. Was there a target date mentioned? They will have to make huge %increases to get to $35k/yr.
We live in Ohio, but have a lot of family and friends in MN. In all of our discussions with them about our D applying there, the OOS tuition hike didn’t come up. Most of them don’t have college age kids, so maybe because it wouldn’t affect them or the people they know who work at the U (as MN residents) they didn’t see or just didn’t pay attention to the articles. Anyway, it certainly wasn’t on our radar here in OH since our papers wouldn’t have picked it up, and her guidance counselor was also unaware. The only reason we found out about UM increases was from seeing posts about it on here. When she was applying to other OOS schools (like Pitt & Michigan), it would never have occurred to me to look for local newspaper articles about possible tuition hikes, but it is certainly something that I will do for any OOS schools when my younger D is ready to apply to colleges. @MerryLee, I think it was in the late 2015 that the president talked about 35K being the goal. You can find it if you search online (but be sure you don’t call it research, or you might get a snarky comment from @StarboardLeeward lol).
Great comment @BubbleGirl90 . We were also unaware of proposed tuition hikes for OOS when my D applied. Fortunately the application was free and cost to submit test scores minimal. It wasn’t until I saw an increase mentioned on this forum that I started looking into it. I do have an inquiry with UMN admissions on 2 points I listed earlier and still haven’t heard back but I’ll report here when I do.
@bwalts61 it should not. Although that reciprocity agreement can always be revoked so do keep an eye on that. (Not saying it will, just that it’s certainly possible).
@MerryLee there are articles online about their target. Google search something like “UMN to increase out of state tuition”. There was also a CC thread on this topic last year originated by Mamelot.
We heard back from One Stop regarding our inquiry around 2 questions. The first was to explain the discrepancy with OOS fees listed on website and those shown in our portal. The second question was to see if enrolled students would be shielded from future OOS tuition increases (for example, locked in or increase amount capped).
Their response matches what many of us already suspected, believed or hypothesized but I’m reporting it as I said I would. The first is that the tuition listed on website is for 2016/17. The amount listed in portal is an ESTIMATE of 2017/18. The actual amount won’t be known until it is finalized in July. The second part of our inquiry went unanswered so rather than pursuing we’ll assume that there would be no protection from future tuition increases.
We went through this roller coaster admission process with our son 2 years ago, and cost was our primary consideration. We did our homework and it all worked out in the end, but it was indeed very stressful. We also have daughter that will be applying this fall, and will more than likely be NMF just like my son, so I called OneStop and was transferred to Admissions. All I wanted to find out was whether they still have the same scholarships available, since their website indicates it no longer being the case.
The lady confirmed that indeed, National scholarship has changed from previous years, and now includes set amount of money vs. full OOS tuition waiver that my son received. She also confirmed, after repeated probing, that the OOS tuition is set to increase in future years, and the National scholarship will obviously not protect the student from those hikes. I asked if the full OOS tuition waiver will still be offered in the future to NMFs, just not as National scholarship, and was told that there are no current plans for that.
I hope this info will be helpful to you and other parents considering UMN-TC. It is a great school, my son loves it, and we had nothing but positive experience with it. But, like millions of other families, we are on a very, very tight budget, and there is no way I would sign up today for substantial annual tuition increases. Any questions, let me know.
jhi818- Congratulations Had you been accepted to any other of the programs at U of M or were you just waitlisted for Carlson? Just wonder how it works if you are waitlisted for one program but already accepted to another?
Does anyone know how it works if you are accepted to your second choice and wait-listed for your 1st choice? Will I get notification if they accept me to my 1st choice?
