****UMTC Fall 2016 Applications/Admissions Thread****

My D18 was accepted to CLA last week, and notified today that she was accepted to the UHP. She applied 10/30.
Stats:

OOS (Ohio)
ACT: 34
3.8 UW, 4.3 W
Rank n/a
3 AP’s, 5 dual enrollment classes
Sr. Yr. courses: AP Stats, AP Lit, dual enrollment Calc I & Calc II, Spanish 2 (already had 3 yrs. of another language)
NHS; High Adventure Girl Scouts; 3 yrs. varsity tennis; over 400 hrs. of service with same organization (and a leadership role there); other EC’s at school; works as a tutor and nanny in the summer; coached younger sibling’s sports team this year.

Waiting to hear about scholarships. They have eliminated the waiver to in state tuition and replaced if with scholarships that will not be adjusted for the huge upcoming OOS tuition increases. Unfortunately the tuition increases make it much less desirable.

Good luck to all!

@uofmmom are you in-state or OOS?

@makasin yep me too OOS applied Golden Gopher app. not sure if that means anything? I was late October so I think my acceptances or waitlist or def are all coming next week.
At least based on what I see on the threads…crazy!

I am hoping someone can provide feedback on chances of honors admissions. My S17 was accepted into CBS a few weeks ago and we are both hoping he will get into the UHP, but have heard nothing yet. Our concern is his gpa and subsequent class rank. Wondering if they will look at his overall course load and involvement in consideration, or if class rank and a moderate ACT score will keep him out. I know all the honors students are high achievers. Here are his stats

ACT 33
GPA uw 3.965 w 4.174
Class rank 21 of 276 (92%) or 13 or 276 weighted (95%)
All enriched courses when available, but they are not weighted
5 APs to date with A’s and 5’s in all (US History, Biology, Human Geo, Language and Composition) except A- in one semester of Chemistry and a 4 on the test.

Senior load includes 4 APs (Calc, Physics, Econ and US Gov), Anatomy & Physiology
Freshman load included a full year of each Physics and Chemistry, plus environmental sustainability so will have 7 years of lab science
He has gotten all A’s except the A- for one semester of AP Chemistry, A- for the freshman chemistry and a B+ for Issues and debate class.
W GPA and class rank would be higher except he has so many regular weighted classes. There are seven periods in the day, but going into senior year he already had 25 credits because of 4 language credits earned outside of school.

He has 4 years of Orchestra plus three of concert band and is first chair this year. Was national merit commended.
His ECs include Boy Scouts (Eagle Scout) and lots of service, Math League (lettered each year and state last year), Knowledge Bowl each year (state last year), Youth in Govt (leadership last and this year), Robotics (world tourney last year), Link Crew last year, NHS last and this year, receives language tutoring weekly during school year, volunteer at church, volunteer at local thrift shop in the summer, Chamber Orchestra all years, Jazz Band all years, Pep band this year, piano lessons through 11th grade, National History Day last and this year (placed at state last)

Anxiety is running high waiting for possible honors admit which would seal the deal for U attendance. We see some already got honors invite, but not sure of stats or they were stellar.

Anyone have feedback on chances? We are in-state if that matters.

I turned in my application and (I thought) all of my items on October 29th. However, it seems like my guidance counselor forgot to mail in my fee waiver or it just didn’t go through. I got an email in the middle of NOVEMBER saying that I was missing my application fee. I’ve been pushed back to Regular Decision and that makes me so upset with myself. :frowning:

@skimom2016 the primary factors are the same as for admission, but at a much higher level: GPA, class rank, course work, and test scores. Secondary factors may include certain honors, or exceptionally heavy course load, or significant involvement in community service, etc. Your son’s record is outstanding and hopefully he’ll be selected. Is he checking the tracker regularly? That will be the first indication.

Here are the stats and admission criteria. Honors is decided by college so it’s possible for someone with slightly weaker stats to be accepted to a less selective college, then selected for honors in that college. CBS and CSE are the two most selective. Keep in mind that admission is also possible after he matriculates.

Good luck to him!

@aimlesswriter - that is too bad! Do you know how to check your application tracker in order to monitor when items are received? The application fee or items is something they’d definitely list. Make sure your counsellor sends that in ASAP, faxing if possible (or e-mailing - whatever they accept).

You are a first Gen. student, correct? There is still hope! Which admitting college did you apply to at UMN?

I’m in! Tracker just confirmed acceptance to Engineering! I checked late last night and it hadn’t changed and there it was this morning. Not sure how late they posted last night I am on EST so it was after 7pm my time, unless it was today. Good luck everyone!

Do they tend to release decisions on certain days of the week or is it completely random?

Do they tell you if you are rejected in the Tracker?

I think they change tracker as soon as possible and yes they do rejections on tracker too. I read on last years posts. Not here yet…I don’t think

Congrats @Seacoast! Thrilled for you!

@EGScout98 no declines or waitlists will come out at this time but yes, if that will be the news it should be on the Tracker as well. They will continue accepting (and should pick up the pace, hopefully) till January and then much closer to the 31st they will release the other decisions who applied by the Priority Deadline. If you applied after that, they may still accept you early on if there is room.

@JBStillFlying I didn’t know about the application tracker until they sent me an email. Yeah, I am a first generation college student, so I don’t really know much about this. I just really hope it doesn’t affect their decision too much.

@JBStillFlying, we are OOS.

@uofmmom OK so hoping for National. I agree with @Seacoast in #134 - don’t read too much into it right now as your daughter’s stats are excellent. You can certainly call up her admissions counselor and find out what the timing would be and/or whether she’s in the running for the National or another scholarship. These are sent by regular mail (which is slow this time of year!) but hopefully if she’s been granted a scholarship they can release that info. to you. Also look into college-specific scholarships - there should be a link on the scholarships page. Good luck to her!

I was accepted into CSE

GPA: 3.875 unweighted, 4.27 weighted

ACT 35 composite (36E, 33M, 34R, 36S), also submitted a lower 33 composite that had 35M

What does the tracker look like when you get accepted?

@huet99 - The status of my son’s changed to the following text:

“Congratulations! We are very pleased to notify you that you have been selected for admission to the University of Minnesota College of Sci and Engineering. Admission to the University and our freshman-admitting colleges is determined by a holistic review of each individual student’s application materials, including the student’s college(s) of interest. We consider students for admission to their college(s) of interest, in the order students have indicated, and take into account in our admission review a student’s interests and academic preparation. Please note that your official admission packet is on its way to you in the mail. To confirm your enrollment now, click here. We look forward to welcoming you to the University of Minnesota community.”

Thank you. I applied a while ago and am still waiting.
