I think that since you’re applying as a junior, that will help your chances and make your high school academics matter less. Your EC’s look fine to me, I am not quite sure how much they matter. I would say based on what I’ve heard from UNC admissions counselors (this is purely anecdotal so take it with a grain of salt), difficulty of course load does make a difference. A friend of mine (NC resident) applied last year as a sophomore transfer and was rejected with a 3.7 college GPA likely due to an easy course load (he called the admissions office and they said that was the main reason for rejection along with minimal growth in academic performance). If you could chance me or give any input on my chances (from my post above), I’d appreciate it. @UNCISMYDREAM
@HSstudentNC Thanks for the reply, what classes will be considered easy courses, can you give me some example? Do you think I have easy course load?
@HSstudentNC I think you have a good chance based on the information you provided!
I don’t think your course load is easy, but that’s just my opinion. You have a fair amount of math and science classes which tend to be more difficult and time consuming than a class like Art Appreciation (which I would consider an easy class). Other examples of easy classes (based on my personal definition) would be humanities, arts or social science classes that are “intro to” or “survey of”. @UNCISMYDREAM
@HSstudentNC thanks for the reply, do you think having a CSE research with a professor will increase a little of my chance getting in? I did not get the LOR from that professor because I have the research with him in the Spring 2018 term. I’m applying Computer Science by the way
Currently, a sophomore attending SBU in NY. I’ll be applying as a junior, OOS student. I want to get into Business college.
Ethnicity: Caucasian (international student from Turkey).
Major: Finance
College GPA: 3.78
HS GPA: 3.9ish
SAT: UNC doesn’t require SAT or ACT for juniors.
TOEFL: I am exempt. Sixth year in the USA.
College ECs:
- Member of Turkish-American Association
- Member of Investment Club
- Member of Honor society club
- Have done some interns in Turkey
High School EC/Awards (not all, just ones I’m including)
- Couple community works
- Done abroad community work
- Some clubs in HS
Hey all, I’ll be applying as a junior but not sure if I have to submit ACT/SAT scores. Also, am I sophomore or junior candidate on CommonApp? I have like 55 credits with upcoming Spring classes?
If you have no more than 55 credits, you will be considered a sophomore. You need to have at least 60 to be considered a junior. Sophomore applicants must submit SAT/ACT scores, but it is optional for juniors. @yankeebanger
@HSstudentNC thanks. It’s the first time I see a college is taking junior applicants.
Just an update from my previous stat
Can someone chance me, please?
My stats:
College GPA: 3.551 with 46 credits completed.
High School GPA: 2.67 weighted, 2.42 unweighted. (I know it is pretty bad)
Major: Computer Science
Will apply as a junior transfer
Current school: University at Buffalo
Tests scores: Not going to submit them because it’s not required for junior transfer, they should still have my tests scores since I’m reapplying.
Will have 18 credits for the spring term and have 64 credits prior enrollment
I want to know does the difficulty of class taken matters during the admissions process?
How would you guys rate the difficulty of class I have taken?
Classes have taken:
Calculus1: B-
Calculus2: A
English(writing class): B+
CSE Seminar: A
Intro to Computer Science I for major: A
Intro to Computer Science II for major: B

Survey of Mass Communication: A
Data Structure (it was a very challenge class): B
Digital System: A
Geography and word economic: B
General Chemistry: A-
Intro to Linear Algebra: Spring 2018
College Physics: Spring 2018
Computer Organization( A very difficult and challenge class): Spring 2018
American Diversity & Design: Spring 2018
Independent Study( a research with a professor): Spring 2018
Extracurricular:

My background: I’m reapplying because UNC is truly my dream school and I really want to go there and finish my Bachelor degree, I got rejected during my senior year in high school. My sister will be graduating spring 2018, I don’t know if this helps a bit for the admissions decisions or not. My essays will be decent; I have a letter of rec from my advisor.
What else can I improve my chance of getting in?
Any suggestions and replies are greatly appreciated.
Also, I heard that UNC likes to accept more junior transfers than sophomore and freshman, is that true?
369 out of the 709 transfer students that transferred Fall 2017 were juniors compared to 236 for sophomores and 104 freshmen. They didn’t give data on how many students from each class were admitted, however I think we can infer they accept more juniors. Overall, 1,123 out of 3,299 applicants were admitted (34% acceptance rate). 38% of the 709 transfers were NC community college students. Average college GPA for juniors is 3.71. This information came straight from the UNC class profile page. I don’t think your high school grades will affect your chances very much as an incoming junior. Your EC’s seem fine. Your college GPA is below average but within an acceptable range since rigor is taken into consideration. You are at a disadvantage being out of state since a large percentage of students come from NC community colleges or other NC universities. You need to make yourself stand out on your application and in your essay. This may be the area to focus most on, since the GPA you apply with won’t change, extracurriculars likely won’t change etc. A solid recommendation is always helpful. I’d recommend a professor you are close with or at least knew you well. This is all just my advice and I’m no expert so take what I say as you may. @UNCISMYDREAM
Thanks for the advice. At the large public university, it’s pretty hard to get a letter of recommendation from professors since they have research to do. Yea, my GPA is a bit lower than the average, because Cal 1(B-) brought my GPA down a lot, but the good thing is I got a A in Calculus 2.
By the way, I forgot to mention that I’m first generation college student does that help?
I thought out-of-state does not matter for the transfer admissions, it only matters for the first year applicants.
34% of the fall 2017 class were first generation college students, so yes that does help. I retract my statement, it does not matter whether you’re out of state or not but a large percentage of the transfers admitted are from North Carolina, but that’s likely due to the higher amount of in state applications. @UNCISMYDREAM
@HSstudentNC I think in-state applicants still have the advantage because I saw a stat on UNC website that the acceptance rate for in-state is little higher than out-of-state. The applicants for in and out state are about one to one ratio by the way.
Wondering what did you guys write about for the main Common App transfer essay. Did you guys write the main transfer essay that only works for UNC or just general transfer essay?
I did both the common app transfer essay and the two UNC specific essays.
@HSstudentNC Is yours common app transfer essay only works for UNC?
The common app essay isn’t UNC specific. I’m assuming you’re talking about the one with the “Please provide a statement that addresses your reasons for transferring and the objectives you hope to achieve” prompt. It’s just your reasons and objectives for transferring in general.
Yea, that’s what I was talking about. I wrote my main common app essay only works for UNC because I’m only applying UNC on the Common App. Don’t know if this is a good idea or not since I wrote UNC specific for the main common app.
