Can someone chance me?
So for a bit of background- I had to medically withdraw from the IB program my junior year of HS as I missed a lot of days and a copious amount of schoolwork.
I earned a GED
Anyways, I’ve since completed a year at my local community college with a 3.78 GPA and with decent EC’s (Mission Trip’s to Guatemala and Cuba)
However, my ACT score was a 21.
I know this is significantly lower than the average, but I also self-reported a learning disability and explained that I never received accommodations for the one time I took the ACT.
With that being said, do you think that there’s still a chance given my strong GPA and EC’?
I’m assuming you’re applying as a sophomore. Your GPA is right in line with the average for transfers who enrolled Fall 2017. The ACT range was 27-32. From a purely academic standpoint, you are not far off except in ACT. Your EC’s sound fine. Essays are important, so if you haven’t started them yet, take your time and make sure they are how you want them to be. A good recommendation always helps some as well, especially with instructors you know well. If you look up the class profile for fall 2017 on UNC’s site, you can find more detailed information on the profile of transfers and the stats associated with it. @TarHeelHopeful12
I have already submitted everything including essays and received a great recommendation from my English teacher, which I hope will help since I plan on majoring in English. I just hope my ACT score doesn’t leave me uncompetitive.
@HSstudentNC Thanks for the response and details on admission stats. I really hope that UNC can be holistic when it comes to the ACT score and understand that the score isn’t representative of my academic potential (something that can be seen with my GPA freshman year) Anyways, all that’s left to do now is pray and wait.
@TarHeelHopeful12 Hi there. How many credits have you completed at your local community college and what was your high school GPA? If you don’t might share the classes you have taken, that would be great! And I, hopefully, can give you some rough estimate.
Hey! I’ve completed 32 but will have 50 by the end of this semester.
I’ve completed : Critical Thinking, Geology 111, English 111, American History 2
English 112, POL 120 &220, SOC 210, COM 110, ACA 122, PSY 150
I will have another 18 this semester and will have math included in there as well.
HS GPA during my 2 years was around a 4.2 W. Unsure about unweighted but it wasn’t bad.
Your rigor and amount of credits are good for your prospective major. You have more hours than a typical sophomore applicant which may help you some. 4.2 W high school GPA is good, though for sophomores it matters less than first year students. I also see that you’re an NC community college student which I am as well. 38% of the transfer class last year came from a NCCC. @TarHeelHopeful12
@TarHeelHopeful12 based on my experience, you have a good chance getting in. Your ACT will be less weighted than the first year applicant since you will have 50 credits completed prior enrollment, I don’t suggest retaking the ACT because they only want to know what you got when you were in high school. You HS GPA is pretty strong as well. Also what major are you applying and what math class you taking this semester? I’m not an expert, this is just my experience what I have done on the admissions research.
I plan on majoring in English. And I will be taking Quantitative Literacy.

Think I have a good chance?
Your GPA is slightly low but within the range of accepted students. As an incoming junior, your SAT/ACT scores are much higher than the average student in your class. You won’t have to submit the scores if you don’t want to. Your ec’s look interesting as well. I know it may not be entirely accurate, but I would check through the UNC Fall 2017 transfer thread to see the stats/profile of accepted students there. And this is just my advice, take it with a grain of salt since I’m not an expert or anything. @aflacduck13

@aflacduck13 Hey, I’m applying CS at UNC as well. If you don’t mind sharing it, what CS courses you have completed at UNCC?
@nduclaunc you chance seems good, just make sure on the common app main essay, explain why UNC fits you, what attracts you to UNC, and what can you bring to UNC.

@UNCISMYDREAM I made my Common App essay specific to UNC as well. Is there any reason not to do this, even if you aren’t applying to other schools via Common App?
@UNCISMYDREAM Data structures was the class that I withdrew from last semester. I didn’t particularly like the way the professor was teaching and I thought it would help me focus more on other classes if I withdrew from it to lighten my work load for the semester and give me more free time. I’m taking it this semester tho
@raytransfer99 I did that too because UNC is the only school I’m applying on the common app that required the essay, and I don’t think it’s a bad idea. What did you write about?
