UNC-CH non- Honors vs USC-Columbia Honors College

Hoping to get some feedback between these two schools for premed. Which school can my S get a better GPA? Carolina has great reputation plus a great basketball team.
USC- H has smaller classes, he will get to know his professors well and get more personalized recommendation letters plus dedicated research department. Honors housing for 1 year as well.
He plans on taking up Public Health/ Biostatistics which accepts 20 students in Junior year at Carolina. He is leaning on Carolina, but I’m afraid that he might not do well.
He does debate ( 4yrs), deca (1), sports could have played in D3 or D2. Top 10 in HS.
Costs about the same. We will pay for it.

Does he have a guaranteed admit to UNC’s Public Health major?

Not yet. I think he will apply in Sophomore year. The choices are Nutrition, Biostatistics and Health Policy. Bio is the hardest with 3.75 cGPA reqt to be accepted. He got 29 on his ACT Math, so I’m worried. His Science was 35 ( took 6 practice tests before the exam). Maybe he is better off taking Biology major. I really don’t know. He is currently taking AP Statistics with a grade of 95. He is a first Gen college.

When you say 20 are admitted at Carolina, you mean UNC?
Odds are high he will NOT get into his major (probably 5% if only 20 are admitted, perhaps lower). So what other majors would he consider?
Is he a premed?
Biology has a very low ROI. Biostatistics has the highest.
How well did he do in precalculus? Calculus? Has he taken AP Bio? AP chem? (Successful students in bio 101 and chem 101 at both universities I’ll have either or both so he’ll have to prepare ahead of time to keep up with them.)

UNC Chapel Hill has statistics available. Admit rates are actually rather high, though that may be largely due to self-selection.

Biostatistics: 20/26 admitted
Environmental Health: 30/35 admitted
Nutrition: 30/36 admitted
Public Health: 43/95 admitted

I’d go for Carolina, personally; very few schools (if any) beat its combination of great academics and quality of life. I am undoubtedly biased, however, and USC Honors has a reputation for being one of the best honors programs.

Tough choice. Loved both in our tours.
