My daughter was just accepted at UNC (OOS) and may also be accepted at Davidson RD in April. She attends a large public high school (750+), so Davidson's size is a concern to her. Any help comparing/contrasting the two schools would be appreciated. She has visited both and attended a summer residential program at Davidson.

Wow. Apples and oranges basically. Both are great schools, though, so I’m sure whatever choice she makes will be the right one. UNC is a large school with big-time athletics programs and an active greek scene. I don’t know too much about Davidson except that it is a great school, but is also very small.

The easiest way to make the decision is to just visit both of them. In order to compare them equally though I would suggest that your daughter pick her top 5 most important factors. Like location, size, cost, athletics, social, even rank or prestige if that’s important. Order those factors by their level of importance and give the more important factors the most weight. If they both seem like a tie then just go with whichever feels better on your visit.

UNC is a large school, with 28,000 students, while Davidson is MUCH smaller at 1,700 students. It really depends on what she wants out of her college experience and where she’ll be more comfortable. They are both wonderful schools, and I feel like the size would be the biggest difference and factor I would consider if I was deciding between the two.

I agree with all of the above. I am a UNC alum so remember all the good things about UNC, but often think that if I had to choose again, I would go small-smaller class sizes, personal attention, someone to give you a pat on the back…just all around more involved in the college experience. There is sooo much going on at UNC that sometimes it seems like you dabble in a lot rather than getting involved in a little. Any insight is valuable to us!
