UNC Vs Davidson

Hello!

So I have been accepted into both of these colleges, but I am very unsure which one to attend. Finances will thankfully not be an issue as I will be mostly covered by the Davidson Trust and Carolina Covenant. I understand that these two schools are pretty different, but I wonder which one would be the most worth it. Davidson has no graduate students so the professors focus more on students (presumably), whilst UNC offers more on campus activities and a more diverse student population. I’m worried that Davidson’s social life will feel too much like high school, and that UNC won’t help me get a job as much as Davidson. I have also been invited to join the honors carolina program

I’m confused. Do you mean Davidson vs UNC-CH?

Davidson is a small private school north of Charlotte while UNC-CH is a large public school in-- Chapel Hill.

Have you visited the campuses?

Finances can be an issue if your family cannot afford the remaining cost to attend.

Mod Note: OP, I’m assuming that you meant UNC vs. Davidson based on the content of your post, so I changed the title of it. If the title’s not reflective of your intention, please PM me.

These are two very different schools. Have you visited?

Yes… UNC has grad students, but the professors do focus on the undergrads. Do you prefer a small college or a large university?

Congrats – you have two great options! In fact, those were 2 of the 4 final colleges that my daughter narrowed her list to (including Honors Carolina).

What do you plan to study? My daughter plans to do biology and did quite a deep dive into the programs so I have some knowledge there.

Honestly, I think it does come down to big vs. small. Does the idea of a big school where you can always meet lots of new people and even re-invent yourself a couple of times energize you or overwhelm you. Are you okay being in some big intro class at times? Are you a self-starter who will seek out opportunities and build relationships with your professor? If so – UNC will be amazing for you!

If you prefer knowing all your classes will be small, you desire strong relationships with pretty much all your professors, if you like the idea of less competition for opportunities, anda tighter knit community where you’re less likely to get lost in the crowd, then I think Davidson might be a better fit.

Both are great places and I know both well. My daughter has ultimately decided on Davidson because she wants the smaller classes that fit her learning style and the tight knit community. The Honor Code and focus on integrity also speaker to her. But when I was her age, I picked UNC b/c the idea of a big school was very exciting and represented endless new experiences.

Both choices can carry you far in life if you take advantage of what they offer. It’s just a matter of preference on your part, really.

Again – congrats!!! You’ve worked hard, I’m sure, and have an amazing four years ahead of you! Please do let us know what you choose!
