@foxh8er Project Uplift may have been a waste of time for you but I can guarantee it was a very good experience for other students who may not be as familiar with the college process as you are.

Chance of snow in the Eastern part of NC tomorrow night. I wonder if they will release the results a day or two earlier?

Really didn’t expect to be waiting until the actual last day of January to find out. Oh well. I guess Chapel Hill will be letting EA applicants know in the middle of February next year?

@katyhhufham and fox8er
Any program like Uplift is only as beneficial as you want it to be. Uplift was a great experience. Sure the stuff about admissions and financial aid was more of a review for a lot of us but the actual rooming and social experience was something fun. No better way to spend a weekend at-least for me and a numerous other students across the state I imagine. And katy is right that for a lot of minority students (I am guessing you are minority as well fox8her?) from different backgrounds this program is useful for all purposes, learning about admissions and financial aid and everything. Just my opinion.

I think that if anything it would NOT be earlier. If the snow is going to be a problem until Wednesday there is no reason for them to release it earlier.

@matrixsurgeon I loved it!

Also Im from as far southeast you can get in NC and school has already been canceled for tomorrow and Wednesday but I doubt that will affect admissions unless UNC buildings shut down.

Here are some more specific “In-State” stats for the Class of 2016, which should be similar to the current group.

In State SAT = 1,925 Average - 639 (R), 655 (M), 631 (W)
OOS, for comparison = 1,990 average - 656 (R), 674 (M), 660 (W)

ACT scores for in-state were not listed though all students ACT average was 29.9.

9,975 in-state applications, 4,966 accepted (49.8%) and 3,214 enrolled (32.2% of NC applicants, 65% of accepted)

76% were in top 10% of graduating H.S. class, 94% in top 20%.

67% of all enrolled stidents attended NC public high schools (81% of NC enrolled)

Other Stuff
Female = 59%, Male = 41%
Caucasian 67.1% Asian = 10.0%, African Americam = 7.8%, Hispanic = 5.9%, Mixed & other = 9.2%
NC Resident Children of Alumni = 641 (16%), Non-Resident children of Alumni = 121 (3%)

@matrixsurgeon, @katyhhufham - If it were actually about the college process I wouldn’t mind. But about 90% was a mindless pep rally. I went there to see if I could learn more about their CS program, but nope - just “Buggatti” at full blast. I still don’t know what “turn up” means.

The only highlight of the weekend were a talk by one of the admissions counselors (who I had met personally on another UNC event a few years earlier), but that was about it.

Taken from thenewsobserver website: "The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has offered admission to 7,571 first-year applicants for the fall of 2012.

The University expects to enroll 3,960 students this fall, 3,247 from North Carolina and 713 from the around the country and the world.

The number of applicants this year shows a 24 percent increase in applicants over the last year with a record number of 29,486 people applying. That’s an increase of 47 percent from the number of people who applied five years ago.

Applications from out-of-state students increased 35 percent over last year, from 14,324 to 19,392. Applications from North Carolina students also increased 7 percent, from 9,429 last year to 10,009 this year. Nearly half of the North Carolinians who applied were offered admission, compared with 14 percent of those from outside the state."

So, 713 out of 19,392 OOS. WHY???

@fox8er
You have to look at this from their standpoint. UNC is a school with a lot of school pride and one that prides itself on that very fact. I think that the things that happened at Uplift (which I personally liked) were just reflective of UNC’s overall culture. I understand that there might have been too much of “turn up” for many people but the program was as much social (probably even more so) as it was informative. The program is basically a recruitment method for UNC so I understand the nature of most of the events that occured at Uplift.
If by CS you mean Computer Science, UNC has a great CS program (which you probably already know). Did you not go to one of UNC’s specialized program days? They had several of them a little while ago. I remember them having different topics from journalism to biology to business/econ. I believe that computer science was also one of them…

BTW the term of “turn up” is a universally (american) phrase that simply means to get pumped up and ready for fun. And music like “Bugatti” (albeit overplayed a bit) just is part of that.

Unc admissions just tweeted that snow/bad weather won’t delay decisions

weather should not delay decisions…all they have to do is push a button

Well pushing a button might not be possible if the office is closed for snow

When UNC says scores will be available Friday does that mean 12:01 am ?

its typically 430 or 5pm

University of Maryland just released EA decisions and they had really bad weather…keeping fingers crossed

we still haven’t even gotten the ‘pre-email’ and in the past UNC posted their decisions a day or 2 after the email was sent so it’s looking like Friday at this point regardless. Congrats bigbooklover on UMD acceptance … my daughter got in too! Now waiting for UNC.

Got into UMD scholars but I’m in state.

Really don’t think ill get accepted to unc but it would be nice- do I even have a Shot?

Gpa

ACT: 32 (E-34/M-30/R-31/SC-31) Writing 11

I won’t bore you w/ ecs but strong emphasis on music (drums) and leadership
essays/ recs were solid

Do my GPA and ACT give me a chance for OOS? or should I brace for Rejection?

Congrats coleman4 and dorris23 on UMD…not sure if I will get into UNC so glad I got into UMD

@ dorris23, I’m not good at the ‘chancing’ but your stats appear within the range:

Admission

30,835 applied
8,243 admitted (27% of all students applying; 51% of NC applicants; 15% of out-of-state applicants)
3,946 enrolled (48% of all students admitted; 63% of NC admits; 23% of out-of-state admits)

Academics

1st in high-school class 7% (of those whose schools reported rank)
2nd in high-school class 13%
Top 10% of high-school class 78%

25th-75th percentiles
—SAT Critical Reading 590-710
—SAT Math 610-710
—SAT Writing 580-690
—ACT Composite 28-33

@coleman4

Thanks, I definitely hope so. the 25-75 on the sats and acts must be higher for OOS though.
