UNC Chapel Hill EA Applicants 2018

Rejected OOS… dang. I wasn’t sure what to expect. Oh well.

I got deferred. I’m kind of in a state of shock…I’m in-state, my GPA is a 4.8, top 10%, I’ve taken AP courses each year, play the piano and elite soccer. Endless community service. I guess it was my SAT score of 1870 that killed me…oops.

I’m just confused considering there were kids from my school to get accepted that aren’t in the top 10 or even 25% and GPA’s were much lower than mine. :frowning:

Congrats everyone!

I think every person who applied from my school got in. It’s kind of odd considering that UNC has never accepted this many people from my school before and no one seems to not be getting in instate…

rejected… international :(

My son is an IN STATE EA and did NOT get in with 1920 SAT & 29 ACT & 3.61 GPA (THE top charter HS in this area area so this would be more like a 3.9 GPA for most public school).

Japanese language studies & has been studying Japanese (private tutor) since he was 13. Nobody in any family has any Japanese ties so he has been out there pursuing it on his own. He’s well traveled (Japan, Austria, Germany, Mexico, Belize and numerous others countries).

He took the SAT & ACT early in his Junior year (prior to calculus) and only took each a single time with no attempts at improvement. His “critical reading” was a 750. It looks like if he could have boosted his Math from the 580 it was to 650+ he may have had a better chance. He could probably re-test & re-apply but he is good with his second choice of USC. I think his mother wanted UNC for him more than he did even though she was a State grad. Just thought I would share for others to compare.

I look forward to meeting some potential classmates!

mtnprotracy - Sorry to hear that you had a similar experience to our son’s and it looks like you were focused on arts (like our son) and perhaps UNC decided to restrict volumes in that particular area as others focusing on other areas with lower stats appear to have gotten in. Regardless, hopefully you have other options.

@ndabunka - Thank you! one thing’s certain UNC-CH is unpredictable. You never know what the focus will be. I work at my son’s high school as the librarian and have assisted students with the college application process for over a decade. I really felt he was very strong candidate based on the students who’ve been accepted from our school in the past. We applied everywhere else (well, except App State - he’s been admitted to their Honors College) for regular decision…so we have two months of waiting to hear from his other choices. A great school will be fortunate to get your son as a student!

Anyone know when regular decisions are announced?

Accepted OOS

ACT: 33
GPA: 4 UW 4.83 W
2 AP Exams, 8 College Courses, 13 Honors Courses
Member of NHS, ADL, REACH Drug Prevention, etc.
Dad went to UNC for PhD, Mom for undergrad so I guess I’m a double legacy

^ ndabunka - sorry to hear you weren’t accepted - I believe I ‘predicted’ that earlier as your son’s stats were similar to my son, who was not accepted last year. He will enjoy USC. My son goes there and loves it. In fact, my daughter just got accepted to UNC - as well as USC earlier (Honors college) and she is considering USC over UNC. She agreed to tour UNC and learn more about both options first as well as others she has.
