For those who did not receive the Scholarship Day invitation email on Friday, does it mean they will receive no merit scholarships?

@4beardolls
I believe that if you (me neither) did not receive the Scholarship Day invite via email by now, you most likely will not have any merit scholarships for UNC. There are two exceptions to this however. One is if you get into the Chancellor’s Science program that gives 10k merit scholarship per year (through Excel@Carolina btw) and two is if you are one of the few EA applicants that will get invites for the second Scholarship Day in the coming months (very few I believe). I think that at this point, I have almost given up on hopes of getting a merit scholarship from UNC. They invite very few people to their Scholarship Days.

As an OOS admitted student I was hoping for my S to get invited, but he didn’t:(( Paying OOS with not merit scholarship is impossible

Do we know if any OOS got Scholarship Day invites? Not sure that I have seen any posted here.

Same here. DS is OOS and was really hoping for some merit $. Without it, this would be close to the level of other private universities.

@Mocha99
I haven’t heard of any OOS posting scholarship invitations. But I really don’t know how that works
@4beardolls
Right!!

I believe very few out of state students are invited to Scholarship Day - I think around 15 out of the 120 invitees.

So what exactly is Excel Carolina? I got a letter about it today, and I’m slightly confused.

@Collegecrazy1996
It is basically a broad group of first year students that have their hands in one or more of the ten opportunities that were listed on that letter. It is like a entrance to getting those special programs based on what you like and want. It is unique because the way it runs is weird and in some ways unprecedented. You fill out the survey by ranking it like the letter says and they grant you one of the opportunities and they try their best to get your top choice or choices after that. It is slightly confusing, yes. You should look at the UNC page on it though! They have a FAQ section. Congrats though!

@matrixsurgeon does the letter say how many people received the Excel @ Carolina invite?

I got an Excel letter today. I guess no scholarships for me, but that’s alright. On a different note, does anyone actually see this “My Events” page on My Carolina? I have looked everywhere and can’t find it…

@neil0826
No, the letter itself does not say how many total people are selected for the program but I would guess it is definitely not more than 700. If you add up all the spaces available in each of the activities (assuming 300 slots for Honors), it would definitely not be more than 600-700. Because everyone is guaranteed at-least one and some applicants receive multiple, it might even be less than that!

Sorry to hear that you can’t find the My Events page! Are you sure you logged in through the link below for “Applicant Login”?
https://unc.askadmissions.net/Vip/Default.aspx
If you login correctly, the My Events section of My Carolina will be right in the middle of the screen. You just click “Click here…” to see the actual events.

@matrixsurgeon thanks for the information! The FAQ on Carolina’s site helped.
@neil0826 my letter for Excel did not say how many were invited

those who have gotten the Excel Carolina could you post your stats? I am trying to see whether I could get it or not in the coming days. If you are uncomfortable doing so, I understand.

@Collegecrazy1996
No problem! Glad to help. Nice Birth-year btw! Haha.
@rafanadal
4.0 UW, 35 ACT, Dedicated EC’s, 18+ advanced courses (above Honors, combination of AP and dual enrollment). In-State Applicant. Poorly written UNC-specific essay though (wrote them night before)… probably what sealed the Scholarship Day “door” shut.

In state
30 ACT
4.0 UW
Many volunteer EC’s
I believe my essays were strong, I spent quite a lot of time on them and they were creative

Thank you @matrixsurgeon! I was on my ConnectCarolina and not the page with Events. Thanks for the help!

And @rafanadal
OOS
36 ACT, 5 5’s and 3 4’s on APs so far, a 7 and a 6 on IB SLs so far, 4 IB exams and 3 AP exams this year
3.97 UW/5.0 W at time of application, #2 in class of about 320
300 service hours, mostly in animal rescue, which was the subject of my UNC supplement essay
CA essay was strong, UNC essay was good, teachers recs were probably phenomenal, not sure about counselor rec
If it helps, I think our school has some sort of recognition in the Admissions Office, because we usually send 1 a year OOS, get a couple more in, and they’re often not up, at least by stats, to the typical caliber of an OOS UNC accepted student…I’m always amazed by who we got in when I read CC threads of who else got denied OOS.

As far as the invites to events go, I talked to one of my very close friends today who was also accepted. She is ranked one place above me in our class and we have almost identical stats, save for our extra-curriculars which are probably considered equal. I only got the Explore invite, but she got Explore, LaUNCh, Decision Days, and Carolina Firsts. She is first gen college student and low income, and I am neither. Just something to think about!
