My son was admitted EA to both UNC and NCST (Statistics). Does anyone have feedback on the new 1st year curriculum (IDEAs in Action)? Based on what we have read about the 1st year path for all students, it appears to be much more focused on intellectual growth, writing, and real-world applications and discussions. The kids do not hit their Major courses until Year 2.
He is definitely more of a math/hands-on/technical student vs. being right-brained. We are definitely concerned that he would struggle in the UNC learning environment.
Is the first-year curriculum too skewed/difficult for hands-on learners?
Both our sons got in; One via Global Launch Granada - other direct. If there are any other parents whose son or daughter will go to Global Launch Granada, DM me. Would be nice to connect.
I could see the challenges of kicking off your college experience abroad (biggest challenge is probably on the return). Having said that Granada is a neat city with a good young vibe (UNC has had a strong program in nearby Seville): good spot for an international experience.
at 43000 applicants it seems their numbers are down from 2020. Question: if out of staters only make up 18% and are held to a COMPlETELY different level of achievement…how can this school be ranked so high?
Can you provide the source of UNC having only 43,000 applications this cycle? These numbers sound off since they had over 57,000 applications in 2021-2022.
That is true of many top-ranked publics (Uva, Mich, etc) though: the OOS kids typically have much higher stats and a much lower acceptance rate than the ins-state admitted kids. Ranking is based on much more than acceptance rate.
18% is the max. They enroll a lot lower than that. Also, I’m not sure the stats are that different. The legacy admission rate is the same or higher as the in-state admission rate. In-state kids, if they’re not rural, are generally in the top 10% of their class.
my son is a freshman and daughter has been admitted for next year. He has not found the required new curriculum to be too challenging - he has actually enjoyed them . It’s just a little difficult to use freshman year to figure out what you are going to do because the new requirements consume much of first year.
