I think the issue here is that GPA is impossible to compare student to student school to school as no two schools have the same course offerings and scales. I know at UVA they emphasis course rigor and grades in those classes (the transcript) vs the GPA.
Agreed–based on the threads from last year, many top stat students were denied. It seems that the essays and letters of recommendation may play an important role too.
Look at something like the allowed practice of not counting your Freshman year grades due to COVID-19 for this HS Class of 2023.
At our high school, Freshman do not take APs so even straight “A’s” usually lands them a GPA of 4.25 which may very well be their lowest weighted GPA of their 3 years.
I hope that there are holistic reads that take all these nuances into account.
Just saw on twitter that NCSU said Monday Jan 30 for decisions. Disappointed- really hoped it would be today. Do you think UNC will release next week or wait the day after NCSU?
Wow. These numbers for out-of-state are really daunting. Puts UNC amongst some of the most competitive universities in the country for an out-of-state student. Guess we’ll find out soon. Good luck everyone.
Which numbers? can you share
@pinkpanther24 UNC-CH said in an email, and recently in their socials, decisions would be released before 1/31/23 (the end of the month).
Was it a recent email?
Last year chapel hill released EA decisions the day before ncsu.
@Mom23hopeful email was maybe a month or two back. Socials recent. Per my HS Senior.
Yep, getting into UNC from oos is like getting into an IVY. 8% last year and I would guess they received even more applications this year because of staying test optional.
In my experience, UNC is a lot more holistic than NCSU. I think NCSU is trying to catch up to UNC, at least on paper with grades and standardized test scores. So, they seem to prefer higher stat kids versus those that are more well-rounded. Also, at both schools, major plays an important role. Impacted majors are much harder to get into.
This is all speculation though! Only a few more days until we find out.
do you know when they’re [UNC Chapel Hill] is releasing the EA decisions, or is there not a confirmed date yet?
Portal astrologists were correct two years ago when my DD applied for Class of 2025. This place was blowing up with over 1000 posts IIRC. It was quite fun actually – buttons disappearing, then reappearing on the portal etc.
I think decisions were released on a Thu. So, I do not know for sure but my money is on sometime later this week.
Agreed. Keep an eye out for later this week.
Spoke with someone in person from admissions; it should be any day now.
Whaaaaaaat- do they have a confirmed date or is it just any day at this point?
Why can’t these schools just give a date so kids don’t have to keep checking!
fr, it would be so much nicer to know in advance.
Son is a second year student at Carolina. Went through this process a few years ago with my older son as well. UNC typically releases decisions on the last Friday in January sometime after 4:00 PM. That way, admissions doesn’t have to field many/any phone calls from unhappy applicants or parents. Saturday morning is a good bet if Friday doesn’t happen. Stay tuned, but more than likely before 1/31, and most likely by the weekend, if it is like usual.
