UNC Chapel Hill Early Action for Fall 2022 Admission

They are nuts for not accepting your son.

UNC has not taken anyone from my D’s HS in years
this year they accepted 3. It’s odd how these things work. So my D gets into UNC which, we didn’t expect because of the history, but then unexpectedly gets postponed by Mich, which takes a ton from her school. So unpredictable. Grateful UNC showed her love.

We just had a close friend waitlisted at a school yesterday they should have been an easy admit to. This is a brutal process, yay for UNC!

My d is same situation! Life took a crazy turn for her! Never expected a yes from UNC but postponed from UMich where she always
Wanted to go. What now??

Same situation as us (and son prefers UNC over UM anyway). But UM is known for postponing high stat kids they don’t believe will attend. I am pretty sure your D has a great chance at UM if she wants. We’re waiting to hear from our son whether he even intends on writing his LOI there, though. UNC wasn’t really on his radar, because he assumed OOS rejection. Now he’s fallen in love.

D22 rejected OOS (no surprise but I found these posts helpful when helping her build a list so chiming in)
1490 SAT
3.99 UW (school doesn’t weight)
6 AP (all 5 so far), several honors and dual credit too
major Philosophy
decent EC/volunteer, etc
good essays and recs

she’s sad because we have friends in Chapel Hill and she loves it there but she knew it was a big reach

My older D applied to UVA (OOS), not expecting to get in and with very little consideration to actually attending. She got into a bunch of “elite” schools. We visited UVA after she got in, she fell in love, attended, and had an amazing experience. People couldn’t believe the schools she turned down for UVA. She knew what was right for her and she made the smart choice.

The point is, all your kids will have options and they may end up at a place they never seriously conisdered
like my D at UNC. Time will tell.

I know waitlist is a long shot but UNC says they don’t rank the list so how do they select students from the list?

If they are like other schools, they do it to fill in holes in their class. So if they’re low on a certain demographic or major that is who they will choose.

Oh geez. My poor girl. I’ve been following this thread for months, and saw that decisions were out. She was afraid to check her portal, and wouldn’t let me do it either. I’ve been stalking this thread and seeing all of the AMAZING students who were either waitlisted or not accepted at all, so my hopes were not high. We are OOS, NY area, excellent grades/scores/ECs
but that doesn’t seem to matter with this applicant pool. I finally couldn’t resist, and tried the ONYEN hack last night
“User denied.” :sob: DD was peculiarly quiet and withdrawn all day today, so I figured she’d finally checked the portal. After a LOOOONG day of being a quiet Mom, I asked if she was OK. “I didn’t get in to Chapel Hill,” she said. A few hours later: “You can look at the rejection letter if you want.” So, out of curiosity, I did
and she was WAITLISTED! Clearly, my kid only read the “We’re very sorry
” part!

Now, I KNOW that the odds are extremely slim for OOS waitlist, but I will tell you that we have a much-less-sad little girl here in NY tonight after I set her straight!! :joy: Congrats to ALL who applied to this incredibly competitive school this year
Clearly, it has NOTHING to do with ability or credentials. Who knows what they are looking for???

Any experience with getting off waitlist in the past? Does demonstrated interest help? Advice appreciated!

Georgia Tech

Last year 4431 OOS accepted waiting list positions and 12 were offered admission (under 1%). The year prior, 2535 OOS accepted waiting list positions and 193 were offered admission (around 8%).

I didn’t realize those awards had gone out yet. I thought they were still in the interview stage.

Thank you! This is very helpful. Not great odds, but she’s still feeling happy about the waitlist
I will not rain on her parade.

Why would they waitlist over 4K when they only took 12 ppl. Seems like their acceptance statistics are really off.

Last year due to COVID admission numbers and yield were hard to predict for many colleges.

Does anyone know where my D should email her loci?

So many amazing kids ranging from perfect to near perfect scores along with the APs etc.

Just so difficult OOS. My D instate got accepted but loves Clemson. Sometimes it’s just the fit and they know where they’re meant to be

Are they sending physical acceptance packages this year? It has been two weeks now from decision day and nothing here yet

My DD has been accepted at 5 schools and only 1 has followed the acceptance email with “snail mail glossy” acceptance. It seems so weird to me compared to my older children, but DD doesn’t know any different. I guess this is the way they do things now?!
