You could say the exact same thing about UNC, and I’d wager that UNC is more of a household name (academically and athletically) nationwide than Wake Forest.

Seven kids from my graduating class went to UNC, and I can go weeks (or longer) without seeing a single one.

As is true with most larger universities, like Berkeley, Michigan, UVa, and the like. Nothing unexpected there.

Wake has a slightly better undergrad education, but it isn’t worth the price difference from UNC unless you already value going to a smaller school. My friends at UNC always tell me their classes are easier than high school APs gradewise (fewer written tests and essays than Wake). Wake students always complain about grades, but that has as much to do with complaining culture as much as reality.

One person mentioned not liking Wake’s campus when they visited during Summer, but the campus is basically running on embers during summer school so that doesn’t reflect the regular atmosphere at all.

It isn’t an obvious decision which way to go, but once you make your decision immediately start hating the other one in all sports.

There is a reason UNC is a top CC university and Wake Forest isn’t.

At my high school, not in the context of the entire state of Florida, Wake Forest is not well known for academics. That was all I was trying to say.

Quote: “At my high school, not in the context of the entire state of Florida”

It is good you clarified that your high school, wherever that may be, does not speak for the entire state.

Also, just because a college is “a top CC” does not mean everything. Look at the ACADEMIC stats of William and Mary (which is not a “top CC”), and then look all ACADEMIC stats of UNC, and be reminded, DO NOT INCLUDE BASKETBALL, only academics.

On second thought, DO include BASKETBALL this year. ;)

The two are tied at #28 in this year’s U.S. News rankings, despite the fact that Wake’s peer assessment score is hampered by its lack of doctoral programs. Take away the peer assessment scores and Wake’s a top 25 school while UNC’s not.

The truth is North Carolina has too many great schools (that is an oxymoron!) to have any one be the best. I would be proud of that if it was my home state! What a dilemma, to have to choose between Wake Forest and UNC, many people would trade places. Again, best of luck to all in your college selections.
GO DEACS!!

People need to remember that Wafe Forest’s COA is over 3X UNC’s for instate students. In our house WF would need to come up with a heck of a package to make it worth turning down UNC.

For what its worth. Wake Forest University is cheaper for my family than my public in-state university. As state governments–North Carolina included–continue to suffer economically, costs will go up, financial aid/scholarships/funding down, etc.

Point is, do not discount a school because of its price. Furthermore, private schools are more willing to work with you.

UNC will be raising instate tuition by $200, which is practically nothing. For what its worth, UNC is actually increasing the amount of financial aid and scholarships it gives to people, not the other way around.

Not sure if you are talking to me Willington Wave - but I’m not discounting WF. If they are able to bring the COA for my child to 15-18 grand per year I would gladly enroll them.

The Val of S1’s class went to WFU. She was also accepted to UNC-CH (instate). She was not happy at Wake. She left after one semester and transferred to UNC-CH. She has been very happy there. She was a theater kid in h.s., not wealthy and not into the Greek social life. I’m sure there are tons of happy kids at Wake and some not happy ones at Carolina. I just knew this girl personally so this thread caught my eye.

“The two are tied at #28 in this year’s U.S. News rankings, despite the fact that Wake’s peer assessment score is hampered by its lack of doctoral programs. Take away the peer assessment scores and Wake’s a top 25 school while UNC’s not.”

It’s not like either one is ranked in the Top 25, so it doesn’t matter. It’s like two 300 pound girls arguing over who is skinnier…

I don’t know anyone at UNC who even thought of applying to the the State University of New Jersey-Durham Campus (aka Dook). Why pay $30,000 per year more to go to school in the ghetto and have terrible athletic programs to cheer for?
