UNC-Chapel Hill vs. UMD

I was accepted to both of these schools (in state for UNC), got into honors at UMD and a small scholarship. I'm trying to decide which one to accept, so if anyone has advice, please share! I like both of them, I know UNC is a better school but its really close to home and I wanted to get away, and UMD is a change of surroundings. Also, i'll probably major in biology. I posted this thread in the UNC forum too. Thanks!

Wow...I have a lot of respect for UMD but to even think about turning down an acceptance to UNC boggles my mind....most people work their whole high school and even college career to be accepted to UNC--as you know, its an honor.

i would pick UNC. That school is really hard to get into and its really good

Yes, I know UMD isn't as good a school. UNC is an amazing school and i'm definitely thinking of going there, but the turn-off is that about 100 people from my high school go there every year, I wanted something a little different. However, I may end up there anyway.

I was waitlisted at Chapel Hill and I know if I get taken off the list I'll be down there in a split second. That's just me though.

haha..."I MAY end up there.." people DREAM of the opportunity to go to UNC...ehh...Im just giving you a hard time :) Both of the schools are great.

I got into UMD and got rejected from UNC. If I got into both, I would go to UNC. However, I didn't, so I'm going to Arizona.

even if u 100 ppl from ur high school r gonna go there, UNC is a big school. u'll make new friends

definately UNC!!......

First off UNC is very hard to get into for out of state students. And this is what makes it seem so exclusive. Maryland takes around 30-40% from out of state...UNC takes a much much smaller amount. So part of UNC's rep is based on the fact its so hard to get in for out of staters because they take so few, not because its such a great school. I am not saying its not a good school..it certainly is. I am saying that alot of the exclusivity is due to the low numbers they take.
Many kids that apply from out of state would get in, if they lived in state - many have better stats etc than the instaters ..its the fact that they are out of state that keeps em out.
So this means that when you go to UNC it is not as diversified. You have a lot of exceptionally smart out of staters or ones with a hook (like athletics) and then you have your UNC students.
And you have a very high ratio of females so males are looked upon more favorably from out of state.
If you compare the crime stats, and other stats with MD..they are very similar.
Now UMD honors is an exceptional program ..it is indeed like a school within a school..kids are treated like gold and the course selection is very interesting.
UMD is also a beautiful campus as is UNC.
However UNC has a prettier off campus than UMD. UMD's town is not very pretty.
Did you get into honors at UNC..what is the price comparison for you?

BTW my daughter was waitlisted at UNC. They told her she would have been in like that if she was instate. (so we compared all the stats etc.)
My husband did not feel that the differences in the two schools were worth the price differential for us to send her to UNC and she accepted UMD honors.
As far as 100 kids you know going to UNC..do not let that bother you. That was my D's concern about MD.
Well MD is a huge school. And yes she will see someone from HS occasionally but its so different when you are away from home. She made a solid group of friends. And she absolutely loves it!
What is your price differential? And other concerns.

a helluva a lotta kids have been watlisted at UNC. You don't seem like you really want to go there because its so close, so do somebody else a favor and allow the school to take another person off the waitlist

Hi, just to let you all know, I decided- UNC-Chapel Hill. Mostly, I decided I just liked it better than UMD and it was just a better fit and much better price. I visited both again and made my decision that way...and I realized that it doesn't bug me so much that so many people from my school are going there, its a huge school with lots of new people. Good luck to everyone still deciding!

Congrats on your decision!
Like I said earlier my D. was concerned she would know tooo many people at MD also. And she occasionally will see someone from HS..but its kinda cool in the new environment and she has made a whole new group of friends just like you will.
Good luck at UNC!

Folks. sorry to burst your bubble, but UNC CH is not better than UMD in everything. For example, I would take Maryland if you are interested in engineering, business or communications or even education (Maryland is surprisingly well ranked in education and counseling). For most other majors, UNC might be better, although MD just got a new performing arts building.

I agree with you taxguy that UNC is NOT better than UMD.
If you compare the stats they are very very similiar in everything including crime

Size wise UNC is smaller by about 10,000 undergraduates.

But for admission requirements..(these are from '03)

UMD SAT 1 560-660 verbal... UNC SAT 1 570-680
590-690 math 580-690
95% of UMD students had GPA of 3.0 or higher
96% of UNC students had GPA of 3.0 or higher

The biggest difference is the "hard to get into" aspect. UNC is harder simply because they take only 17% from out of state..UMD takes 32%..
so this makes UNC appear more exclusive. IF UNC opened up their ranks it wouldnt be like that.

I will hand UNC the fact that they have a prettier town though.

UMD SUCKS! I am in-state for UMD, and I am not even applying. THeir campus is disgusting, and it is located in a ghetto. Go to UNC!

Poog..obviously you have strong feelings against UMD and no one will be able to change your mind. However, as a parent who visted a number of college campuses..I can tell others here that though I agree the town is not very attractive..the campus is lovely and the facilities at UMD are outstanding. And its very close to the metro and DC.
The campus is very large and has so much to offer. Though UMD may not be for you..it certainly is for others!

BTW I noticed in a previous post you mentioned you were interested in JMU..my D was invited to honors there but turned it down as she did not find it anywhere near as appealing as MD visually and in other ways - to each his own. But it doesnt mean we need to bash other peoples choices.

Angstridden, I completely agree.I taught at the University College at UMD. Although the surrounding area is marginal, the campus is very lovely, and UMD has great, well-maintained facilities. In addition, as my post noted above, some of their programs are higher ranked than UNC based on US News and World Report's Rankings.

Is the business program ranked higher than UNC taxguy?
My D. has not declared but is interested in majoring in business. I do recall reading that the head of the business program was determined to make it one of the best in the nation. And I know it has an excellent reputation.
My hubby visited both UNC and UMD and he said he would be very hard pressed to pay out of state tuition for D. at UNC when the opportunites at UMD were just as good and the diversity was better.
I was very impressed when I visited the UMDCP campus! And what struck me the most was not the buildings I saw (which were awesome) but the students and how happy they were. They love it!
