Would anyone who got an invitation to scholarship day mind posting their stats? I’ve been anxious to see if I qualify for any merit scholarships, but so far nothing. I am OOS and was invited to Carolina Firsts and Explore. Is there still a possibility I could qualify for Scholarship Day?
Note that an invitation to rank your choices to Excel @ Carolina doesn’t mean you’ll get in any particular program offered. They try to match you. And, my bet is that Scholarship Day applicants get any and all such opportunities–likely whichever they choose—especially if they aren’t a Scholarship winner as UNC-Ch still really, really wants them to attend. They ail learn about all that on Scholarship Day.
So is it safe to say I’m not invited to scholarship day if it’s not on mycarolina yet? I applied for the Robertson back in November so not sure how that factors in.
Question. I know that Honors Carolina is under the umbrella of Excel@Carolina opportunities, but based on their website and on past CC posts, it seems to operate a little differently than most of the Excel programs. Is it possible to receive an invitation to Honors Carolina without receiving the Excel@Carolina survey, or is acceptance into Honors completely dependent upon Excel?
@goldenberry Wondering the same thing.
My son did not get invited to either. But what I understand you can take honors classes without actually being enrolled in the Honors college. Someone correct me if I am wrong. Thanks.
@college67 That’s correct! You’ll still be able to take honors classes, you just won’t get the fancy title that comes with admission into Honors Carolina. Nevertheless, if you don’t get in now, you can apply for Honors Carolina later while attending Chapel Hill.
@NCrent - any further info on if any OOS people received @Excel email? I know OOS scholarship invites are one in a million, but we are really rather stumped that my D wasn’t offered honors college admission (I know it is super competitive, so glad she just got in!!.. just seems odd based on responses from all other colleges she has applied to).
Out of state, accepted early action.

@kids, Same here. My son’s stats are pretty incredible, so I’m really surprised he didn’t get an invite to either. UNC will be off the table with no merit aid. Ah well, on to the next scholarship week end.

@SouthernHope: Received invite to scholarship days+ admit to honors college (but no Excel@Carolina) through EMAIL today (Thursday), received paper copy yesterday (Wednesday). Paper copy was postmarked Jan 22. I’m OOS. I don’t know anything beyond that except for conjecture. Hope this helps!!
@kidsrexpensive I am OOS and received the Excel@Carolina email last night. I was a little bummed not to get invited to Scholarship Day, but the same thing happened with the Honors Program at BC so honestly I’m just happy they recognized me at all! I even filled out the questionnaire already!
@applicant0209 Did the honors college email come separately or was it part of the scholarship days email?
@college67, you asked could your son take Honors courses without being in the Honors College. My son (graduates in May, yay!) was not initially sent any “Honors” invitations, merit scholarship offers, etc. However, after his Freshman year, a professor recommended him as an Honors level candidate (he’s an English major) and he was then eligible to take Honors classes. I do not remember all the details but if you want further info, PM me and I’ll get him to explain it to me again, ha, and I’ll pass along all the details. He has had a fabulous 4 years, spent Spring of '14 as a Study Abroad Student in Montpellier (he is double minoring in French & Creative Writing) and will graduate with around a 3.6, very proud of him and happy to soon have another Tar Heel grad in the family. (Signed his Class of '80 Mom!)
You do not need to be in Honors Carolina to take honors classes. The only advantage to HC members is that enrollment is opened up earlier on honors classes to us and we get notices when new classes become available. Even then, depending on the course subject matter, the department offering the honors course may require departmental consent before you can enroll.
Thanks Everyone. I was disappointed he did not get an invite for the honors but there are so many deserving kids. Hopefully once at Chapel Hill he might get recommended. His major is Political Science.
Yes, students absolutely can apply for Honors Carolina membership once here. You should review the process, requirements and timing as outlined on their website.
@brenbell - Way to go! Congrats!
Thanks to all!! D happy to be accepted to UNC. Congrats to all those accepted to Excel Carolina!!
surprising how few deferrals were given while there were a ton of straight up rejections
