@gummyworms57 I’m fairly certain that all Scholarship Day invitations have been sent by both snail mail and email already for IS and OOS, so you would have gotten one by now. Scholarship Day invitees (this year, at least) were given automatic acceptance into Honors Carolina, but none (as far as I know) were invited to Excel@Carolina, which offers many programs, one of which is Honors Carolina. Anyway, it seems to be impossible for one to receive both a Scholarship Day invite and an Excel@Carolina invite, which explains why you didn’t happen to receive one the former. Hope this clears things up.
Out of state son still hasn’t received acceptance packet yet? Has anyone else?
OOS - haven’t received packet yet
Oos just got the packet!
I haven’t gotten anything…i’m OOS…and no invitations for any scholarships either My mom is all 'no way are we spending $53,000 a year…" so my hopes of UNC are fading…
OOS and have not gotten the packet yet. If he does not get Robertson there is no way that he can attend UNC.
We are instate and my son received the packet yesterday.
@applicant0209 Thanks for clearing that up! And guys, I got my package just YESTERDAY and I am in-state
Kid received UNC Chancellors Science Scholars finalist invitation today. Does anyone know about this program?
For those who have received the packet in the mail, is there any mention of merit opportunities, or did those opportunities pass by if not invited to Scholarship Days? (And Skrunch, congrats to your child on Science scholars finalist. I’m unfamiliar with it, but it sounds promising.)
Son received OOS packet today. No scholarship but a statement of tuition increase was included. : (
Thanks @ Enjoytheday.
@Skrunch Can you tell me more about you kids CSS offer? My S was hoping for the same program
@blah919 - Sent you a PM
Per earlier notes, it appears accepted prospective students started receiving acceptance packets in the USPS mail a couple of days ago. My S has still not received anything yet (I was told by AO they were mailed out a week ago Tuesday upon inquiring). Are others still waiting too?
The packets were actually mailed out on Saturday, Feb. 7. Many NC residents received them on Monday.
Thank you wstrav. Was beginning to think the Pony Express was reinstated in my area.
My son is OOS, accepted ED. He was invited to Excel, but not to Scholarship Day. Reading through this thread, we came to understand that ED admitted students might receive an invitation either to Scholarship Day in late Februrary or to Excel, or to neither, but not to both. It made sense that the very top tier of students, who were going to be considered for scholarships through UNC, were invited to Scholarship Day to compete for that money. The next tier of students were the Excel invites, who might receive Honors or some other opportunities, but were not eligible for UNC scholarships. We did understand that Robertson was a totally separate process, but as we understood it, Scholarship Day was for UNC administered scholarships. So that all made sense.
Shortly thereafter, my son was contacted by UNC and invited to come out to visit UNC for three days (not as part of Scholarship Day - just to come out and visit) at their expense. He was given a travel grant form to fill out, he chose a convenient date in March, and they bought him a ticket. We thought it was unusual, but then again, having no experience applying for colleges before, decided that this was just something we’d never heard of, but that is part of the recruiting process.
During this time, my son still held out some slim hope of scholarship money through the Pogue Scholarship. However, the website said although there was no additional initial application for Pogue, that students who applied for admission would be considered and that invitations would be sent out to those the university wanted to invite to apply for the Pogue. When, by the third week in February, he’d not received any invitation to apply for Pogue, he contacted UNC directly and asked whether invitations had gone out. He was told that, yes, invitation to apply for Pogue had gone out and that if he had not received an invitation, he was not in the running for Pogue.
Not long after that, my son received word that he was a semifinalist for Robertson at both Duke and UNC. He was surprised (and excited), because although he understood that Robertson was a separate process, he figured that the fact that he’d not been considered for Scholarship Day or for Pogue probably indicated that he wasn’t among the very top strongest applicants. He had his interview yesterday for Robertson, and we understand that finalist decisions will go out March 5.
Okay, so here’s where we are totally confused… Today, my son got an email from UNC notifying him that he is a finalist for Pogue! The email invites him out for the weekend of March 20-22. Part of the weekend is an interview for Pogue specifically, but the first day of the weekend (3/20) is referred to in the email as both “Scholar Day” and Scholarship Day" and is not specific to Pogue. What’s also a bit strange is that there is no travel allowance for this Pogue weekend, even for an OOS student. So we are wondering if the travel grant he had previously received was supposed to be for this, even though it was never before mentioned and, in fact, the ticket was purchased for different days in March (dates my son had requested over his own school’s spring break - the dates for the travel grant were left entirely up to him). Thankfully, he’s booked on an airline that will allow him (I think) to change his dates.
If anyone can give us any insight into this process, we’d sure appreciate it. It’s all a bit baffling. We don’t really understand how he became a Pogue finalist without being invited to apply. Perhaps we mistaken that there was an invite only application (though if that’s the case, why did the financial aid office tell us that invitations had gone out)? Also, is this Scholar Day/Scholarship Day (the email refers to 3/20 both ways) a second opportunity for kids to compete for university scholarships, or is it entirely just Pogue? From what we gathered from earlier posts, Scholarship Day was in late February.
Does anybody know how many Pogue scholarships are offered? The email says there are 24 finalists.
Having now read more threads from previous years, it does seem like there is a second Scholarship Day in March for kids who applied regular decision. I’m still not clear whether this “second” Scholarship Day is the one referenced in the Pogue finalist email my son received today or whether there’s yet another Scholarship Day happening in March. Adding to my confusion is the fact that he was admitted early (though perhaps I mispoke when I said it was ED; I think the correct term is EA, but I always confuse the two). Perhaps it really doesn’t matter, but I’d still love to understand what the process is, if anyone can shed some light, especially about how many Pogue scholarships are offered. Thanks!
I had a quick question. For the second Scholarship Day, it is supposed to be on March 20th. However, RD applicants are supposed to find out by the end of March. Does that mean RD applicants will find out if they are accepted before March 20th?
