@clairecm98 Are you instate? Because UNC is not a safety for most OOS students. Just wondering…
@panther2016 yeah I’m in state usually over half the people that apply from my school get in
@clairecm98 That makes more sense now. Good luck!
Mind chancing an OOS?

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):
I’m kind of scared because of how competitive OOS admissions has become. A chancing would be much appreciated
@james1998iq LOL. OOS might be competitive, but I think you’re good dude.
Not to freak any non-alumni OOS out but the acceptance rate for OOS applicants with an alumni parent is expected to be about 50%. This came in a physical letter about a month ago. Figured someone on here might want to know that lol.
@nici288 im in state and also received that letter. my mom told me apparently 2 different letters were sent out: one for probable accepted applicants and one for probably deferred/denied applicants but idk if that’s true
@clairecm98 yeah that might be true but i got it in the mail not too long after applications were due so i doubt they had enough time to review it. Mine addressed OOS alumni specifically but it’s likely that they sent something very similar to instate alumni! I hope both of our letters meant good things
@nici288 is your parent a UNC alumni?
I got a letter saying
“Although admission remains competitive, the children of alumni continue to fare well. Last year, for example, we admitted 60 precent of alumni candidates from North Carolina, compared to 50 precent of other resident applicants.”
I’m not sure if this is a letter that went out to all instate legacy applicants, or if its stats based, or if its similar to a “likely letter.” I have some unusual ties to the university, so posting my stats would be pointless for comparison, but has anyone else gotten this letter, or one similar? If similar, what were the differences?
@lolafinkle yeah my dad is! And @ntk131998 my letter was pretty similar but for OOS
Mine was the exact same and so was my friends
Objective:
ACT: 30
SAT II: N/A
Weighted GPA: 92 (School does not have 4.0 scale)
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School doesn’t rank
Senior Year Course Load: 4 APs, 2 honors courses
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Some school awards in history/Spanish/art
Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Not much volunteering (~10 hours) but I was trying to play college basketball for club and put ~15 hours/week per year into the sport. I was advised to really emphasize the importance and dedication towards the sport. Also played two other sports in HS on top of that. Participated in some clubs (mainly investment club.) Captain for basketball for school and club.
Essays: I talked about creativity in one and how I excel in creative projects and other works rather than in a traditional school environment. Really tried to sell that I have more to offer outside of the classroom since I didn’t try at all in HS and my grades demonstrated that fact (didn’t mention that part obviously.) My other essay was about dedication/perseverance and how I taught myself to play two instruments and jumped up two basketball teams to one of the best in the state despite being small due to dedication and will to reach my aspirations.
Teacher Recommendation: English teacher (very good rec.)
Counselor Rec: Very good.
Additional Rec: Math teacher (good rec.)
State: North Carolina
School Type: Private, very good relationship with UNC (they are well aware of the rigor of my school)
Ethnicity: White

Brother attended if that helps? Also, I went to Carolina and Beyond if that means anything. I stated I wanted to do some sort of English major (because my math grades aren’t great.) I know UNC claims they don’t look at majors, but I feel like that looks better than saying economics or business. What do you all think about my chances? I’m considering it a bit of a stretch and will most likely attend Wilmington.
Chance me for EA?

@PalmTree55: For an OOS student, your GPA is fine, but I think that your composite ACT score is a little problematic.
As you may know, UNC does not accept more than 18% OOS students as freshmen for an entering class; and this year there were a record number of EA applicants to UNC-Chapel Hill: http://uncnews.unc.edu/2015/10/28/unc-chapel-hill-receives-record-19682-applications-for-first-year-early-action-admission-deadline/.
So, you have lots of competition, and I wouldn’t get your hopes up too much. But it’s like the sorting hat at Hogwarts; and only the admissions office knows for sure, right?
I’m a terrified in-state student.
