Wondering how I would look compared to regular admission applicants. I was very surprised to be deferred because i thought i would be denied straight up but now i feel like i have a little hope. Would you recommend doing anything else to help better my chances to be admitted into my dream school?!!

@frankvaldez, increase your chances by writing them a letter updating them about your senior year, telling them why UNC is your #1 choice, and maybe even write an additional essay about something you didn’t get to tell them in the first round. That way, regardless of the outcome, you will know that you gave it your best. Good luck!

Wait if I got the scholarship recognition email does that mean I got a scholarship or is it for everyone? That probably sounds like a dumb question but I never received an email about a scholarship so I’m a little confused.

Also for people who did get a scholarship, other than the email is there anywhere else to check? I want to know but I don’t want to wait until Monday

Here is what I know about Scholarship Day and the Merit Scholarships from my personal in-state experience:

In 2014, my son was accepted Early Action and within a day we gratefully received an email notification regarding Scholarship Day. He attended the day and was awarded a scholarship many weeks later. He opted for another university offering more money.

Now it’s 2016, my daughter applied Early Action, was accepted Thursday and then Friday received an email that she was a “Carolina Scholar” @ $9,000/yr. I was apprehensive that this was a mistake and called UNC to clarify. They decided to do it differently this year. No Scholarship Day.

Still in utter disbelief, I went to UNC’s website to again clarify. And this is what I found:

Will I receive any merit scholarships?
Each year, we award a select number of incoming first-year students with merit scholarships. Early Action applicants who have been awarded a merit scholarship will receive an email within a week of their admission decision.

I wanted to write here today because I, like all of you, have been pouring over the posts on CC to see the timeline from previous years. I have been a very active reader for many years, but never posted until now. I know the feeling of desperation for information.

So in summary (and only from personal experience):

Previous years? UNC had a Scholarship Day. This year? They are “doing it a different way.”

Good luck to all, I truly understand and relate to how stressful this entire process can be!

Hi fullrideplease. Did you happen to ask if they have sent out ALL the emails. “Within a week leaves” me with a glimmer of hope.

I applied knowing I only had about a 5% chance of getting in. I applied and was accepted to UNC Pembroke, Western Carolina, East Carolina, and Appalachian State. I’m choosing ECU.

@minmama I think all the scholarships went out. What I don’t know is if the folks that got into Ivies/S early are going to reject UNC quickly and if those move down a list or not. If you aren’t going to UNC and got offered a scholarship one would hope they reject sooner rather than later if there is a “possibility” someone else could get offered.

giving up scholarships probably will not happen until all the decisions have been received. i.e. April 1st.

I also think they probably just use a number of average accepted scholarships from the past and use that number assuming a certain percentage of offerees are going elsewhere. so my point is if someone hasn’t been offered a scholarship yet, they 99.99% won’t in the future. Some kids who got into SCEA and have parents who don’t have to think twice about cost will start turning down UNC for HYPS if they have any decency. Especially for UNC, any kids who’s parents work at DUKE have financial incentive to spend more than a UNC education elsewhere since Duke will pay everything over the cost of a UNC education, so what those parents save is relative peanuts. I doubt they will offer more stuff april first. They probably do save some slots for RD applicants but I doubt it’s many especially since I think they basically cull the list of Morehead Cain semifinalists to make offers anyway.

@minmama I just got off the phone with UNC Admissions asking exactly that question. They confirmed that the blog was correct and said students could still be receiving merit scholarships. Also, the Regular Decision folks will have merit scholarship opportunities as well. And that the Excel offers have not gone out yet. Here’s hoping!!

@anon145 Just want to clarify your statement concerning the Duke tuition benefit. You said “…any kids who’s parents work at DUKE have financial incentive to spend more than a UNC education elsewhere since Duke will pay everything over the cost of a UNC education, so what those parents save is relative peanuts”

That is not exactly true, although I am sure most of those parent’s wish it was. Duke will pay the equivalent of 75% of it’s own tuition directly to the school that the employee’s child attends to cover that school’s tuition cost. The benefit is not applicable to any public schools in NC due to the low cost of in state tuition in NC. With that said, Duke’s tuition benefit this year is approximately $29,000 after the deductible is paid. It is a set amount that does not fluctuate per school. That is vastly different from everything over the cost of a UNC education as you stated. Still a great deal, but not quite what you were describing. Sorry to be so picky, but the spread of incorrect information on college confidential is one of my pet peeves.

FYI - I am not complaining about a benefit of any kind, just providing the accurate info. I am not even eligible for the benefit any longer since my parent took a new faculty position at a competing out of state school.
