From what I can infer and my personal experience with admission last year, those who have received the email have already been accepted for admission (not necessarily the excel Carolina programs though). They would not send you an email asking about your program preference if they did not want you to attend. I received the email after I had been accepted last year, it seems they are trying to speed up the excel process this year.
DS applied to Carolina Research Scholars Program, Honors Carolina, Innovation Scholars Program and received no email so far. He is high stats and excellent honors. My guess is they are contacting few where they are not sure about the preferences.
@srk2017 yes that’s probably also true. Just saying that if you have received the email it means you’re in. Not saying that those who haven’t received it are not in also. Just thought it would reassure those who have received the email a little.
My D applied to Carolina Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship, Chancellor’s Science Scholars
Program, Honors Carolina and didn’t get an email. She’s a 36 ACT, legacy, URM with nearly perfect GPA from OOS.
Please don’t get too concerned about excel e-mails because (1) we don’t know exactly what the e-mails signify; (2) the excel program is fine but not really a huge deal (many such opportunities are available to all UNC students); (3) there are other non-excel programs, including full scholarships http://scholarsprogram.unc.edu/about , and (4) the real prize is admission. Good luck, everyone!
Not exactly sure what to make of the excel emails. I got one for assured pharmacy and honors carolina but it seems that a lot of very qualified people didn’t receive any. Unless in-state vs. out-of-state has a lot of weight on the emails? It could be that those who received the email are on the bubble, but I’ve seen many other very qualified people receive the email as well.
One theory that has popped up is that the people that are getting them are very strong candidates and the school is trying to match them with the right program (maybe so they are more likely to attend?).
