@ivyleaguedreamen I absolutely disagree that being Native American does not help you, as along as your GPA ,test scores and ECs are up to par that fact makes you a very desirable applicant.A close friend is an admissions counselor for a top tier university and she has stated that finding talented URM is a priority. I apologize if any other post hurt your feelings… this is not what these comments are meant to do. Stay strong and good luck
OOS for UNC is really really tough. Don’t look at the SAT/ACT range stats as a guide. UNC takes in a lot of In-state applicants, those are the people driving the bulk of the scores range. For OOS, UNC, kids better be at least 75th percentile to feel any comfort. I would not be surprised the OOS admission rate is under 13-15%. Take the athletes OOS outside that pool, the rate will be even lower. It is a totally crazy system but it is what it is…
Did everyone’s child get an email last night from UNC Chapel Hill stating that they would not be releasing any admissions either today or tomorrow? Looks like next week.
@CollegeParent123 @wstrav : As I said, math is not my strong suit; and there’s a reason that I work in a profession that doesn’t require a lot of math. :>) And, yes, I wonder whether the recent financial penalties levied on UNC-CH may have a chilling effect on the number of OOS students offered admission.
I guess we’ll find out in the very near future.
Umich also has 11,000 in state applicants and takes like 4200 so 40% acceptance rate for in state while there are 45,000 oos applicants and 11,000 of those are accepted for a 24% oos acceptance rate. Also uva act range is 27-31, lower than unc 28-33. Only in state students can get scores below a 30 though for those schools that accept mostly in state while umich act is 30-34 because it accepts mostly out of state. More or higher proportion out of state acceptances=higher gpa and act sat scores
check your emails.
41 students over the limit last year times about a 25k tuition and fee difference … so the penalty was a million, but they recovered half of it. hope that helps but do think it might affect the number of students deferred (defer more) as they evaluate the yield as it comes in… That’s what I would do! OOS aspiring son … very nervous as all his other apps are RD April 1. I don’t plan to tell him this small detail unless he’s deferred, but i appreciate knowing about it in case he is!
@debbie2th There’s nothing on my email? is it pretty sure they are coming out tomorrow?
debbie2th - can you be more specific? Are you referring to the email from IT that everyone received yesterday? Thanks
wait actually if i’m not mistaken a 1 million penalty is LESS than the tuition they got back? so other than the bad press (which is not good) they really didn’t lose any money?
It’s so cool, all these parents on here looking college stuff up for their kids.
My parents were not very involved in my college applications process AT ALL lol. I paid my own $400 to get an ACT program, researched and decided all 8 schools I would apply too, did all apps by myself. Haha it’s crazy to see parents on here, mine would have no idea what this is
^^ claps for those parents
@Eeeee127 not sure where you got those stats from but all of the reports I see have UVA’s scores higher than UNC’. Doesn’t necessarily mean it’s any easier from OOS with a lower score to get in to UNC, but I have only seen stats that have UVA’s higher than UNC’s.
Haha my son is pretty nervous, and he’s so swamped with sports, AP classes, well you guys know… but he asks me to check this out sometimes… He is pretty stressed out and so sometimes I say, “do you want me to check college confidential to see if people have any insight?” and he’ll say yes. He looked on here once and he told me there is no way he could read this stuff, it would “trigger him” to read all the other stressed out people… He’s trying to do his best to live his life and not freak out every second of every day.
Great you are doing your own process nduclaunc i did mine too. that’s great.
Jumping into the fray here on statistics. I do think it’s a little harder to get into UNC as an OOS student versus UVA. I’m using the links below as my sources for data, and I’m just using data for the class of 2020:
http://uncnews.unc.edu/2016/08/19/carolina-welcomes-4269-new-undergraduate-students/
http://admissions.unc.edu/apply/class-profile-2/
http://uvaapplication.blogspot.com/2016/03/unofficial-admission-statistics-for.html
http://admission.virginia.edu/admission/statistics
For 2016, UVA received 22,773 OOS applications and offered admission to 5,397 (23.7% offer rate). By comparison, UNC received 24,213 OOS applications (about 1500 more compared to UVA) and offered admission to just 3,698 OOS applicants (15.3% offer rate).
As far as “applicant quality”, the middle 50% for UVA “offers” is considerably higher in Dean J’s unofficial statistics versus the class profile at the UVA admissions site. Take the difference in ACT ranges (30-34 for offers versus 27-31 on UVA’s official web site) as an example. I can’t find equivalent data on the ACT/SAT ranges for UNC offers, but I’ll note that if you compare the class profiles for enrolled students on UNC and UVA, UNC appears to have a slightly stronger ACT range, but a slightly lower SAT range.
For both schools, suffice it to say that OOS admission is really really tough, especially un-hooked.
I suspect one of the reasons that the yield is much lower for OOS kids @UNC is that $50K COA is making them (and their parents) carefully consider other options on the table, like private schools that offered generous merit or IS flagship safeties. I don’t think that releasing decisions so late in the EA process is going to help matters either. Most of these OOS kids have been sitting on other offers for a few weeks now, networking through accepted students “groupmes” etc. and some already realize that they can’t rationalize the cost.
My daughter is so nervous about the decisions and is anxious for them to be released. I hope it is today or tomorrow… She’s a solid student, graduating HS with 2 associate degrees through dual enrollment.
@DevilStick those are good points and you are right, both schools are very, very hard from OOS so all offers of admission should be greatly appreciated!!!
@nduclaunc - That’s awesome, you sound like a hard worker. But…aren’t you in school right now lol? My S can’t really check this kind of stuff from his classes?
what proof do we have that the results may come out tomorrow?
